Game of Thrones: War for Westeros Reveals First Full Gameplay Ahead of 2027 Launch

PlaySide Studios has revealed the first full gameplay for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, giving players their clearest look yet at how the HBO universe is being transformed into a classic real time strategy game. Shown during Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live, the official gameplay reveal trailer confirms large scale battles, asymmetric factions, hero units, resource management, base construction and territory control ahead of the game's planned early 2027 release on PC through Steam.

Players will be able to command 4 factions, House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen and the Night King's Army of the Dead. Each side is being developed with its own armies, buildings, mechanics and strategic identity rather than functioning as cosmetic variations of the same faction. The new footage shows infantry formations, cavalry charges, siege equipment, giants and dragons fighting across Westeros, giving each army access to very different battlefield advantages depending on positioning, timing and unit composition. PlaySide's official game overview confirms that players will be able to conquer the Seven Kingdoms through solo play or fight for the Iron Throne through multiplayer skirmishes.

Recognizable characters will function as playable heroes capable of changing an engagement through specialized abilities. The confirmed roster currently includes Robb Stark, Jon Snow, Ghost, Grey Wind, Jaime Lannister, Tywin Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen and the Night King. Heroes can level up, unlock additional abilities and strengthen the forces around them, meaning losing or poorly positioning an important commander could significantly change the direction of a battle. The Night King is particularly interesting because the gameplay reveal shows him raising fallen soldiers back into combat, giving the Army of the Dead a mechanic that naturally reflects its identity from the television series.

The core economy remains recognizably RTS focused. Players will secure resources, construct buildings, train units and capture territory while simultaneously responding to enemy pressure. Terrain and unit counters are also expected to play important roles, something PlaySide detailed before the gameplay reveal when it showed maps such as Ashemark, a focused 1 versus 1 battlefield built around 2 main lanes, defensible positions and opportunities for flanking. War for Westeros moving to early 2027 also detailed PlaySide's focus on unit responsiveness, squad behavior and ensuring that cavalry, infantry and specialized units interact in ways that reward tactical counters instead of simply rewarding larger armies.

The campaign will also allow players to reinterpret major events rather than simply reproducing the television series exactly. PlaySide says players can rewrite important battles and turning points while determining which faction ultimately claims the Iron Throne. That structure fits the Game of Thrones setting particularly well because alliances, territorial control and dramatically different military strengths can naturally produce alternate outcomes without requiring the game to remain locked to the original story. A beta test is planned for later in 2026, with participation details to be announced before the early 2027 launch.

Game of Thrones has always looked like an ideal RTS universe, and the first gameplay footage finally shows why. Dragons, Giants, White Walkers and conventional armies immediately create opportunities for asymmetric faction design, while heroes give PlaySide a way to translate recognizable characters into actual battlefield mechanics instead of using them only for narrative presentation. The key will be balance. A dragon should feel devastating without automatically deciding every battle, while the Night King's ability to rebuild an army from fallen units needs meaningful counters if multiplayer is going to remain competitive. If PlaySide gets that balance right, War for Westeros could become one of the most interesting licensed strategy games arriving in 2027.

Which faction will you command first, House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen or the Night King's Army of the Dead?
