The Future of the Metal Gear Solid Series May Include New Entries and Additional Remakes

The future of the Metal Gear Solid franchise remains uncertain, but according to series producer Noriaki Okamura, it may involve both entirely new entries and additional remakes. Konami successfully brought the legendary series back into the spotlight this year with the release of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, and now the company appears to be evaluating multiple potential paths for the franchise.

In a recent interview with Japanese publication Real Sound, Okamura was asked about the direction the franchise may take following the release of Delta. He expressed a strong desire to continue working on Metal Gear, but clarified that the future is still under review. He suggested that both remakes and entirely new works are under consideration and that Konami is exploring how best to balance nostalgia with innovation.

Okamura explained that the Metal Gear series reflects the evolution of video game history, spanning from early pixel art experiences to cinematic stealth action. Because of this broad legacy, the approach to remaking each title would have to be different. The method used to create Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater would not be suitable for all games in the franchise. This implies that Konami may avoid creating full 3D remakes of the original eight bit Metal Gear titles, as the remake structure applied to Delta is not universally applicable.

Currently, nearly every main entry in the Metal Gear series is playable on modern systems through backward compatibility or remastered releases. The one major exception is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which remains locked to the PlayStation 3. When speaking about this specific title, Okamura noted the difficulty of developing on the PlayStation 3 hardware. The system’s complex architecture resulted in specialized code construction that would be challenging to modernize. These unique technical hurdles have long been cited as the primary reason why the game has not yet appeared on other platforms.

Despite these challenges, a modern version of Metal Gear Solid 4 would be welcomed by fans. Following the release of the Master Collection Vol 1, there have been strong indications that a potential Master Collection Vol 2 may include the fourth entry. If this happens, players could finally experience the conclusion of Solid Snake’s story on current hardware, ending what has become one of the most notorious exclusivity gaps in gaming.

Okamura expressed hope that his team can overcome the development complexities associated with Metal Gear Solid 4 and deliver accessible versions of all core entries in the franchise. Fans remain optimistic that Konami will embrace both remakes and new projects as the next phase of Metal Gear’s return takes shape.

Would you prefer the next Metal Gear project to be a full remake, a remaster of Guns of the Patriots, or an entirely new entry in the series
