Forza Motorsport 5 and 6 Arrive on PC Through Azimuth 1.0 With Up to 40% Better Performance

Forza Motorsport 5 and Forza Motorsport 6 are finally playable on PC through Azimuth 1.0, an unofficial Xbox One compatibility project developed by Almost There Games. The update also introduces support for Forza Horizon 3, improved graphics, unlocked frame rates and performance optimizations that developers claim can deliver up to 40% higher performance compared with previous versions of the software.

According to the official Azimuth 1.0 release announcement, the project now supports 5 Forza titles across Windows 10, Windows 11 and Linux through Proton. The compatibility layer previously supported Forza Horizon 2 and its standalone Fast & Furious expansion, but the latest release significantly expands its capabilities by introducing 3 additional games with customizable graphics settings.

Unlike traditional console emulators, Azimuth executes the original Xbox One x86 code directly on compatible PC processors. Instead of emulating the console's CPU architecture, it translates Xbox specific Windows Runtime calls into standard Windows functions and converts the console's DirectX 11.X graphics commands into desktop DirectX 12. This approach reduces the processing overhead associated with traditional emulation while allowing the games to take advantage of modern PC hardware.

The most significant improvement is performance optimization. Almost There Games reports up to 40% higher performance through reduced CPU and GPU overhead, improved frame synchronization and more efficient memory management. Texture streaming now operates through a dedicated thread, while memory allocations are prepared in advance to minimize stuttering when loading new environments. However, the 40% figure represents the developer's reported improvement over earlier Azimuth builds, not a guaranteed increase across every game or PC configuration.

Azimuth 1.0 Supported Forza Games

Game Original Platform PC Support Through Azimuth
Forza Motorsport 5 Xbox One, 2013 Full campaign and racing
Forza Motorsport 6 Xbox One, 2015 Full campaign and racing
Forza Horizon 2 Xbox One, 2014 Racing and Storm Island expansion
Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious Xbox One, 2015 Standalone experience
Forza Horizon 3 Xbox One, 2016 Racing with Xbox One X graphics presets

Support applies to specific Xbox One game versions. Online multiplayer and Xbox Live achievements remain unavailable.

The addition of Forza Motorsport 5 and 6 is especially important because neither game received a complete native Windows release. Microsoft previously introduced Forza Motorsport 6: Apex on PC in 2016, but that version contained substantially less content than the original Xbox One release. Forza Horizon 3 already had an official PC version, although Azimuth now provides another way to experience its Xbox One edition.

Graphics improvements include resolutions up to 8K through supersampling, ultrawide displays with 21:9 and 32:9 aspect ratios, HDR10 output and frame rates exceeding the original console limits. Players can also customize shadow quality, environmental detail, reflections, vehicle models and anti aliasing settings. Forza Horizon 3 additionally supports its original HDR implementation and Xbox One X graphics settings through the High and Ultra presets.

Azimuth 1.0 also introduces a redesigned launcher capable of automatically detecting compatible games, managing individual graphics profiles, backing up save files and organizing screenshots. Experimental racing wheel support includes force feedback, H pattern shifters and handbrake controls, bringing the experience closer to a conventional PC racing simulator.

Following the main release, Almost There Games published Update 1.0.2, correcting Forza Motorsport 6 crashes affecting AMD Radeon RX 9000 graphics cards and several Linux Proton compatibility issues. The subsequent Update 1.0.3 further improves racing wheel compatibility, cockpit displays and graphics memory preparation.

The project follows other community efforts to preserve console exclusive racing games, including the unofficial PC implementation of Driveclub, which similarly allows original console code to operate on modern PC hardware without conventional CPU emulation.

Azimuth is available through its official itch.io page with optional payment. Users must provide their own compatible game files, as the project does not distribute copyrighted assets. While performance and compatibility have improved considerably, the software remains an unofficial community project rather than a Microsoft supported PC release.

Azimuth 1.0 represents an important development for game preservation, particularly because Forza Motorsport 5 and 6 never received complete PC versions. Running their original Xbox One code directly on modern processors provides an opportunity to preserve content that would otherwise remain tied to aging console hardware.

The 40% performance improvement is promising, but the greater achievement is the combination of higher resolutions, improved graphics and customizable frame rates without requiring traditional CPU emulation.

The project also highlights the potential of specialized compatibility layers. Rather than reproducing an entire console environment, developers can focus on translating the operating system and graphics functions required by specific games.

However, missing online functionality and potential compatibility problems mean Azimuth cannot entirely replace the original console experience. Its long term value will depend on continued development, stability and support for additional Xbox One titles.

Would you revisit Forza Motorsport 5 and 6 on PC with 4K graphics and unlocked frame rates, or would you prefer Microsoft to release official remasters with restored online functionality?
