Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake Arrives on PS5 in March 2026

Koei Tecmo has officially announced Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake as one of the headline reveals during the State of Play Japan event. The beloved survival horror classic will return on March 12, 2026, launching on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement was accompanied by a brand new trailer showcased during the live event, concluding with the long awaited release date reveal.

This remake follows the recent resurgence of the Fatal Frame series, including the remaster of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. Crimson Butterfly remains one of the most iconic entries in the franchise, making its return highly anticipated among longtime fans.

Shortly after the trailer debuted, the PlayStation Blog published a detailed post exploring the remake’s narrative foundations and reintroducing the game’s primary characters. You can read the full write up on the PlayStation Blog.

However, the blog post offered only limited details about the scope of improvements beyond confirming that nearly every aspect of the game has been enhanced. Makoto Shibata, director of the Fatal Frame series at Koei Tecmo, explained that the remake focuses heavily on atmosphere, character detail, and environmental fidelity.

“Every element has been enhanced, from graphics and sound to controls. The texture of each character’s skin and clothing has been meticulously refined, while the setting of Minakami Village has been beautifully reimagined with striking contrasts of light and shadow to create an atmosphere that is both haunting and lifelike,” Shibata writes.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is now available for preorder across all supported platforms ahead of its March 12 launch. As one of the most influential Japanese horror titles of its era, its return promises to reintroduce the chilling atmosphere, tense exploration, and iconic Camera Obscura combat to a new generation of players.
