EA's New Owners Reportedly Eye $25 Billion Unity Acquisition Following BioWare Closure

Silver Lake and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), the 2 largest investors behind Electronic Arts' $55 billion acquisition, are reportedly exploring another major gaming industry takeover, this time targeting Unity Software in a potential $25 billion deal. According to Reuters, the investors approached Unity's management in recent weeks to discuss a possible acquisition, potentially bringing one of the world's most widely used game engines under the same investment groups controlling Electronic Arts.

The proposed transaction reportedly valued Unity at approximately $25 billion before its latest financial results pushed its market capitalization to around $21.5 billion. Unity has since been working with an investment bank to evaluate its options, although no formal agreement has been announced. Silver Lake already holds approximately 8% of Unity's shares following an investment of up to $400 million in 2017, while its CEO, Egon Durban, currently serves on Unity's board of directors. These existing connections could facilitate negotiations, but the acquisition remains uncertain.

The interest follows the completion of Electronic Arts' $55 billion acquisition on August 4, 2026, when PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners took the publisher private. PIF now controls approximately 93.4% of EA, while Silver Lake holds 5.5% and Affinity Partners owns 1.1%. The transaction was followed by significant corporate restructuring, including the official closure of BioWare on October 21 and the cancellation of its next Mass Effect project. EA confirmed the decision as part of its broader strategy to concentrate development resources on major franchises, although it has not established a direct connection between the closure and demands from its new investors.

Unity remains one of the gaming industry's most important development platforms, particularly among independent developers and mobile studios. Its technology powers thousands of games across PC, consoles, and smartphones, while also supporting applications in filmmaking, automotive design, and industrial simulation. However, the company's relationship with developers suffered considerably following its controversial 2023 Runtime Fee proposal, which was eventually canceled in September 2024.

Despite those challenges, Unity's financial performance has improved significantly. Its third quarter 2026 financial results revealed revenue of $622.1 million, representing 32% annual growth, alongside approximately $122 million in net income. This marked the company's first profitable quarter under GAAP accounting since its 2020 public offering, supported by growth in its advertising business and AI powered Unity Vector platform.

If completed, the acquisition would significantly expand PIF and Silver Lake's influence over the gaming industry, extending beyond publishing and intellectual property into the development tools used by thousands of independent studios. However, Unity's engine licensing, subscription pricing, developer support, and future business strategy would remain important questions under any new ownership structure.

The potential acquisition of Unity raises concerns about increasing consolidation across the gaming industry, especially following EA's restructuring and BioWare's closure. While private investment could provide Unity with additional resources to improve its engine, the possibility of greater corporate control over essential development tools deserves scrutiny.

Unity's previous Runtime Fee controversy demonstrated how quickly changes to licensing policies can undermine developer confidence. Independent studios depend on predictable costs, accessible tools, and long term software support, making ownership stability particularly important.

The gaming industry benefits from competition and creative independence. If the acquisition proceeds, protecting developers from restrictive licensing, aggressive monetization, and unnecessary financial pressure should remain a priority.

Would a $25 billion Unity acquisition strengthen the game development industry, or could increasing corporate control over game engines threaten independent developers and creative freedom?
