Dragon’s Dogma 2 Dark Arisen Offers 25+ Hours as CAPCOM Works to Rebuild Player Trust

CAPCOM has revealed that Dragon’s Dogma 2 Dark Arisen will add more than 25 hours of new content when the major expansion launches on October 9, 2026. The studio is positioning the release as both a substantial continuation of the action RPG and an opportunity to rebuild confidence among players disappointed by the original launch.

Speaking with Automaton, producer Naoto Oyama explained that the main scenario set within the new region of Norgan should require approximately 15 to 20 hours to complete. Dark Arisen will also introduce 12 unique dungeons to the base game, with each designed to take between 30 minutes and 1 hour. Combined, CAPCOM expects the expansion to deliver more than 25 hours of additional gameplay.

"The new story takes place in a new region called Norgan. We expect players to spend around 15 to 20 hours completing that scenario. In addition, 12 unique dungeons will be added to the base game. Each dungeon is designed to take roughly 30 minutes to an hour to clear. With 12 of them in total, we believe players will be able to enjoy more than 25 hours of additional content with this expansion.

The expansion has been in development for just under 2 years. CAPCOM initially spent around 6 months following the March 2024 launch addressing feedback through updates before moving forward with the larger project. Director Kento Kinoshita said resolving concerns surrounding the base game needed to come first, while the expansion was developed around delivering new adventures with improved accessibility and playability.

Dark Arisen introduces Norgan, a frozen territory previously connected to the kingdom of Vermund. The new region will contain stronger enemies, hidden equipment, additional story content, and a Relic hunting system built around recovering unidentified items and having them appraised at the Norgandian Settlement. Certain Relics can provide enhanced statistics and unique abilities, creating a repeatable progression loop for players seeking stronger character builds. The expansion will also add 12 Pathfinder’s Trials containing equipment associated with previous Arisens.

CAPCOM confirmed that the expansion is being developed in response to the broad range of player feedback received after Dragon’s Dogma 2 launched. The publisher says its goal is to improve accessibility while providing enough additional content to satisfy existing fans and attract new players. Dark Arisen will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch 2, with the Nintendo version combining the base game and expansion into a single package.

Oyama was more direct during an interview with Eurogamer, acknowledging that some players remain cautious after the technical problems and controversial monetization decisions surrounding the original release.

"We are trying our best to win back trust from those players who felt disappointed in the launch of Dragon’s Dogma 2.
— Naoto Oyama”

CAPCOM released a major update in June that introduced the Eternal Ferrystone, additional Portcrystals, lower travel costs, expanded oxcart functionality, improved Pawn behavior, interface changes, and numerous quest and stability fixes. A second update planned for August will focus more directly on frame rate performance, additional save slots, Dragonsplague changes, enemy adjustments, and further interface improvements.

Oyama believes the August performance update will be the decisive test for players waiting to see whether the base game has reached an acceptable technical condition before purchasing the expansion. CAPCOM hopes that the combined improvements will make returning players more comfortable entering Norgan when Dark Arisen arrives in October.

The original Dragon’s Dogma received its own Dark Arisen expansion in 2013, adding Bitterblack Isle, stronger monsters, new equipment, and a more demanding endgame. That release eventually became the definitive version of the original adventure. CAPCOM now faces the challenge of delivering a similarly transformative expansion for Dragon’s Dogma 2 rather than simply adding another region and collection of quests.

Dark Arisen already appears to address one of Dragon’s Dogma 2’s largest weaknesses by giving players a deeper endgame structure supported by Relics, challenging dungeons, stronger enemies, and repeatable progression. More than 25 hours of content is substantial for an expansion, but its success will depend heavily on the condition of the base game.

The August performance update may ultimately be more important than any new monster or dungeon. CAPCOM needs to demonstrate that it understands why players were frustrated before asking them to invest in another major release. If the technical improvements succeed and Norgan delivers the dangerous exploration that defined the original Dark Arisen, the expansion could become the turning point Dragon’s Dogma 2 has needed since launch.

Will Dark Arisen convince you to return to Dragon’s Dogma 2, or does CAPCOM still need to prove that the base game’s performance and design problems have been resolved?
