Dragon’s Dogma 2 Dark Arisen Finally Expands Combat, but Some Old Frustrations Remain

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is shaping up to address one of the sequel’s most criticized combat limitations, with Capcom expanding the number of assignable Weapon Skills from 4 to 6 while introducing a new frozen region, additional abilities, Relic based progression and tougher encounters. However, early Gamescom 2026 impressions suggest that some of the combat system’s more frustrating characteristics remain largely intact.

The increase from 4 to 6 Weapon Skills is not exclusive to the expansion. Capcom released the change through Title Update 3.2 on September 2, giving every vocation more flexibility before Dark Arisen arrives. The update also expands the save system, improves Pawn behavior, adjusts Dragonsplague, introduces additional performance optimizations and makes several broader gameplay changes. Capcom previously confirmed that Dark Arisen will add new skills for existing vocations rather than introducing completely new ones.

That expanded skill selection was immediately noticeable during a Gamescom 2026 hands on session. Having 6 abilities available creates considerably more room for offensive attacks, defensive tools and situational abilities without forcing players into the restrictive compromises created by the original 4 skill configuration. The tradeoff is a more complicated controller layout, since accessing the additional abilities requires extra button combinations.

Dark Arisen itself takes players north into Norgan, a frozen and largely abandoned territory populated by hostile Beorcans, direwolves and considerably larger monsters. One early quest sends the Arisen searching for winterweed blossoms needed by a local blacksmith, while Pawns continue playing their familiar role by guiding the party toward objectives and reacting dynamically to enemies encountered along the route.

Combat against larger creatures still appears capable of exposing some of Dragon’s Dogma 2’s existing friction. During the Gamescom session, a yeti like roaming monster reportedly required more than 7 minutes to defeat, with repeated stamina depletion while climbing forcing the Arisen back to the ground. Dragon’s Dogma has always deliberately emphasized weight, stamina and physical interaction with monsters, but lengthy recovery animations and moments where player control is restricted can still make encounters feel less responsive than other modern action RPGs.

Progression receives a more substantial overhaul through the new Relic system. Players exploring Norgan can recover ancient Relics and have them appraised at the settlement, potentially revealing weapons and armor with improved statistics, unique abilities or enhancements to existing skills. Capcom describes this as an evolution of the loot driven gameplay associated with the original Dark Arisen, giving exploration and repeated encounters a stronger long term reward structure.

The expansion also introduces the Lost Rites, a collection of 12 new dungeon challenges located across the main game world. These areas contain rare equipment associated with previous Arisen and are designed to provide additional challenges for players returning with established characters. Norgan itself centers around the mysterious Eir and an undying Fallen Dragon, with early gameplay showing the creature summoning undead enemies while fighting the player’s entire Pawn party.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen launches on October 9, 2026. The expansion is priced at $29.99 for existing owners, while a $49.99 package includes the base game and expansion.

Increasing the skill limit from 4 to 6 is arguably one of the most important improvements Dragon’s Dogma 2 could receive because combat variety was never really the problem. The restriction was how little of each vocation’s toolkit could be carried into battle.

Dark Arisen appears to understand that progression also needed considerably more depth. Relics, new skills and dedicated dungeon challenges could finally give players stronger reasons to continue developing their Arisen after the main adventure. The remaining question is whether Capcom can preserve the deliberate weight that makes Dragon’s Dogma combat distinctive without letting stamina management and lengthy loss of control become unnecessary friction.

Do you think 6 Weapon Skills and the new Relic system are enough to bring you back to Dragon’s Dogma 2, or does Capcom still need to make deeper changes to combat and stamina?
