Crimson Desert Ends Weekly Updates as New DLC Makes Damiane and Oongka Full Protagonists
Pearl Abyss is changing its approach to post launch support for Crimson Desert, confirming that the game will no longer receive updates on a weekly schedule following the release of Charting the Unknown on October 29, 2026. However, substantial free updates will continue, while the upcoming expansion aims to address another major criticism of the original game by giving Damiane and Oongka a more prominent role alongside Kliff.
During the latest Dropped Frames podcast, Pearl Abyss marketing and PR director Will Powers revealed additional information about the expansion's narrative direction, exploration systems and future development plans. After months of frequent updates introducing gameplay improvements, additional content and the substantial Crimson Desert Enhanced overhaul, the studio is shifting toward a more sustainable update schedule while continuing to expand the world of Pywel.
One of the most significant changes is the decision to treat all 3 playable characters as equally important protagonists. While the original adventure primarily focused on Kliff, Charting the Unknown introduces independent epilogue storylines for Kliff, Damiane and Oongka, each designed to explore their personalities and individual experiences. These stories become available after completing the main campaign and can be accessed through the Journal menu.
Powers explained that Oongka's new storyline is his personal favorite, while confirming that the expansion's narrative content was developed with the same renewed emphasis on characterization introduced in the Enhanced version. Unlike interconnected campaigns, the 3 epilogues follow separate narratives, giving each protagonist an opportunity to develop independently.
The expansion also introduces more interactive NPC behavior throughout Pywel. Players will be able to interact with ordinary inhabitants, while characters eligible for romance will feature individual quests and relationship content rather than identical interactions. Important allies and friends may also visit player owned establishments and the Greymane Camp, making the world feel more responsive to player progression.
Maritime exploration is receiving additional attention through dynamic ocean weather, large waves during storms, ship boarding mechanics and dangerous sea creatures. Underwater exploration will extend across the coastline and selected inland bodies of water, introducing additional secrets beyond the newly accessible ocean regions. New side quests and exploration activities will also appear throughout the existing world rather than remaining exclusive to maritime environments.
According to Pearl Abyss's official feature overview, shipbuilding becomes available after establishing the Greymane Camp and progressing through the relevant questline, while the new character epilogues require completion of the main story. The expansion also introduces improved housing, claimable castles, business management and Garden of Trials, although these systems have separate progression requirements.
The change in update frequency does not mean Crimson Desert is ending development. Pearl Abyss intends to continue delivering free improvements while allocating additional resources toward larger content releases, moving away from the unusually rapid development schedule maintained since launch.
Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown launches October 29 at 3:00 PM Pacific Time, corresponding to October 30 at 6:00 AM in Taiwan, for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Additional patch notes will be released alongside the expansion.
Pearl Abyss's decision to reduce the frequency of updates is a reasonable transition after months of unusually aggressive post launch support. Maintaining a weekly schedule can become difficult when development resources must also support major expansions, technical optimization and new gameplay systems.
More importantly, elevating Damiane and Oongka to full protagonists could strengthen Crimson Desert's storytelling. The original game offered extensive exploration and combat systems, but its secondary playable characters lacked the narrative attention given to Kliff. Independent storylines and deeper NPC interactions could make the world feel more cohesive while giving players additional reasons to revisit Pywel.
The real challenge will be delivering meaningful character development rather than simply expanding the amount of available content. If Pearl Abyss can balance stronger storytelling with the game's ambitious sandbox mechanics, Charting the Unknown could become an important step in Crimson Desert's long term evolution.
Are you more excited to experience Damiane and Oongka's individual stories, or do you prefer Crimson Desert's expanding sandbox features such as ocean exploration, shipbuilding and castle ownership?
