Ubisoft Is Still Hiring for Beyond Good and Evil 2 Almost 20 Years After Development First Began

Beyond Good and Evil 2 remains in active development, but a recent update suggests the project is still far from completion despite nearly two decades of work. Ubisoft has posted a new job listing for a technical sound designer who will join the ongoing development effort at Ubisoft Montpellier.

According to the job description, the new hire will work under the supervision of the studio’s Audio Director to integrate and implement audio systems across the project. The position covers all audio components including sound effects, music, voice implementation, animation audio, interface feedback, weapon audio and vehicle audio. The listing highlights the continued scope and ambition of the project, indicating that core systems are still being built out rather than finalized.

Although it is reassuring to see that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in production, it is difficult to overlook the concerns surrounding its prolonged development history. The game has existed in some form since 2008 when Ubisoft shared its first public teaser. Since then, the project has endured numerous disruptions, leadership changes and internal restructuring across Ubisoft Montpellier.

The game’s long timeline has often been described as troubled. Several key figures who were central to the project’s early creative direction have departed. Legendary creator and Managing Director Michel Ancel left Ubisoft in 2020 and retired from the industry. Managing Director Guillaume Carmona exited in 2023. Creative Director Emile Morel tragically passed away the same year. These changes significantly impacted a title Ubisoft once classified as a AAAA level project.

Despite the uncertainty, Ubisoft has not canceled Beyond Good and Evil 2. In fact, a new Creative Director, Fawzi Mesmar, was appointed last year, signaling that Ubisoft remains committed to delivering the sequel at some point in the future.

Fans of the franchise did receive a new release last year with the arrival of the Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Edition. Developed by Virtuos Games under the supervision of Ubisoft Montpellier, the anniversary edition introduced numerous enhancements including up to 4K resolution support, 60 frames per second performance, a new Speedrun Mode and additional quality of life improvements.

While Beyond Good and Evil 2 remains one of the longest running active development projects in the industry, Ubisoft’s continued hiring suggests the studio is still investing resources and rebuilding key areas of production. Whether this will finally move the game toward a clear release window remains an open question.

Do you believe Beyond Good and Evil 2 can still deliver on its massive ambitions after such an extended development cycle
