Charlie Cox Says His Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Nomination Should Really Go to the Motion Actor Behind Gustave
Charlie Cox, who received a Game Awards nomination for his performance as Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, says the recognition should not be credited to him alone. During a panel at LaConve 64 in Monterrey, as recorded by Posta Entretenimiento, the actor emphasized that the true weight of the performance belongs to the motion capture talent behind the character.
Cox, known for roles in Daredevil, Boardwalk Empire, Treason and films such as Stardust and The Theory of Everything, made his videogame debut in Expedition 33 as a mechanical arm engineer with a significant narrative presence. Despite the nomination celebrating his contribution, Cox highlighted that the emotional impact and physical expression of Gustave was largely shaped by the French actor Maxence Cazorla, who handled nearly the entire motion capture performance.
“Yes, I am thrilled for this nomination,” Cox said. “There is an amazing French actor by the name of Maxence Cazorla who did almost all of the motion capture for that role. Any nomination or credit I get, I really have to give to him. The performance of that character is down to him, and my voice was just part of that process.”
This is not the first time Cox has downplayed his involvement. He has previously stated that he is not a gamer, did not play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and only spent around four hours recording his voice lines after his agent secured the role. With fans praising his portrayal, Cox remarked that he feels like a “total fraud” receiving credit for work he believes belongs to others.
Meanwhile, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 continues to collect accolades. The game claimed seven trophies at the Golden Joystick Awards, including performance awards for Jennifer English as Maelle and Ben Starr as Verso. It remains a strong contender for more wins during The Game Awards and the rest of the award season.
Fans are already speculating whether Cox will reprise his role in the announced movie adaptation of Expedition 33. However, actor Glen Powell has also expressed interest after sharing that he played and loved the game, suggesting potential casting competition ahead.
