Far Cry TV Series Officially Ordered by FX, Produced by Fargo Creator Noah Hawley
The long rumored Far Cry television adaptation is now officially moving forward. After Ubisoft accidentally published and removed the announcement three and a half months ago, the studio has reinstated the post on its website and confirmed that FX has ordered the series. The announcement, now live for several hours, can be viewed on Ubisoft’s site
The Far Cry series will adopt an anthology format, with each season exploring a new setting and cast of characters, mirroring the structure of the game franchise itself. This format aligns perfectly with the creative vision of Noah Hawley, who will serve as one of the two lead producers. Hawley is celebrated for creating Fargo, an acclaimed anthology series that reinvents itself every season while maintaining a central thematic foundation. His work on Legion and the upcoming Alien: Earth series underscores his reputation for stylish, unconventional storytelling.
Hawley explained:
“What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it is an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme. To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.”
Hawley’s co producer is Rob McElhenney, credited as Rob Mac for the project. Known for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mythic Quest, and the hit documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, McElhenney brings a distinct comedic and character driven sensibility to the collaboration.
McElhenney added:
“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized. Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”
The adaptation is backed by an extensive producing team that includes
Emilia Serrano for 26 Keys
Nick Frenkel for 3 Arts
Jackie Cohn for More Better Productions
John Campisi
Gerard Guillemot
Margaret Boykin and Austin Dill for Ubisoft Film & Television
The Far Cry series joins a rapidly expanding slate of game to TV adaptations, including upcoming shows based on Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed, Life is Strange, Disco Elysium, God of War, Pacific Drive, Mass Effect and Wolfenstein, alongside major successes like The Last of Us, Fallout and Twisted Metal.
This move also aligns with Ubisoft’s renewed push behind its major franchises. Far Cry is one of the three core IPs prioritized by Ubisoft’s Vantage Studios, recently reinforced by a major investment from Tencent. Ongoing rumors suggest Ubisoft is simultaneously developing both a mainline Far Cry sequel and a standalone extraction shooter set in the franchise universe.
With FX, Hawley and McElhenney at the helm, the Far Cry TV series is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious game adaptations yet.
