Bungie Splits Marathon’s Ranked and Cryo Archive Windows After Player Feedback, Making It Easier to Play Both

Bungie is continuing its fast post launch response for Marathon, and this time the studio is tackling one of the biggest frustrations around the game’s endgame schedule. Following player complaints that Ranked play and Cryo Archive overlapped too heavily on weekends, Bungie has now adjusted both windows so players no longer have to choose between them. The change was confirmed through the official Marathon Development Team update, which says the goal is to give each activity a clearer and more focused time slot.

Under the new setup, Cryo Archive will now open on Thursdays at 10:00 AM PT and close on Sundays at 10:00 AM PT. Ranked, meanwhile, will begin on Sundays at 10:00 AM PT and run until Thursdays at 10:00 AM PT. That means the 2 modes now rotate into each other instead of overlapping across the same weekend stretch, which should make the weekly flow feel much less punishing for players trying to engage with both.

This comes just after game director Joe Ziegler publicly said the team was reviewing some of the loudest Cryo Archive complaints. In an earlier post, he highlighted 3 main concerns Bungie was discussing: scheduling for players who cannot always play on weekends, whether there should be a way to access the map without joining a crew, and whether Subroutines could become more reliable vault drops.

One of those issues has already been addressed directly. In a separate Joe Ziegler post, he confirmed that Subroutines will now drop at a 100% rate from each vault during the next Cryo window. That is a meaningful quality of life fix because RNG around vault progression had quickly become one of the most criticized parts of the endgame loop.

The only major issue from that original list still left hanging is solo access. That one is more complicated, because Cryo Archive is clearly designed as a highly tuned endgame activity with both PvE pressure and player versus player risk layered on top. Opening that mode to solo players would likely require much deeper balance work than adjusting schedules or loot behavior. Bungie has not promised a solution there yet, only that the discussion is ongoing.

What stands out most is the pace. Bungie is not waiting long to react, and that matters for a live service shooter still trying to lock in its long term audience. These are not massive structural overhauls, but they are practical changes that directly reduce friction for the players already investing their time and loot into Marathon. In a game where endgame design can make or break retention, that kind of responsiveness is a strong signal.

Do you think Bungie should stop here, or is adding a solo friendly version of Cryo Archive the next fix Marathon really needs?
