Blizzard Reveals Diablo IV’s Warlock and Lets Players Become The Butcher in Season of Slaughter

Blizzard used its latest Diablo IV livestream to deliver a major look at the future of Diablo IV, confirming that the upcoming Lord of Hatred expansion will introduce the Warlock as the game’s 8th class, while Season 12, Season of Slaughter, launches on March 11 at 10 a.m. PST. Blizzard’s official deep dives also confirm that Lord of Hatred launches on April 28, 2026, and that the expansion will add both the Warlock and major class wide updates across the rest of the roster.

The Warlock is not being framed as a traditional ranged summoner. Blizzard describes the class as a brutal frontline demonologist built around aggression, ritual power, and heavy metal inspired style. The class runs on 2 resources, Wrath and Dominance, and its loop is centered on 3 pillars: creating demons and battlefield effects, controlling those summons, and chaining combos by detonating or consuming them to power the next action. Blizzard’s official Warlock breakdown also confirms that the class launches with Lord of Hatred and can wield a mix of one handed and two handed melee weapons alongside a focus.

A major part of the Warlock’s identity is its Soul Shard system, which permanently binds 1 of 4 demons to the player at Level 30 and effectively defines the entire build direction from that point onward. Blizzard has outlined 4 core archetypes: Legion, Vanguard, Mastermind, and Ritualist, each tied to a different demon and gameplay emphasis. That framework is then expanded further through fragment specializations, which means the Warlock appears built for deep buildcrafting rather than a single fixed summoner path. The official class article also confirms that the Warlock class quest begins in Ked Bardu at Level 15 once Lord of Hatred is live.

Another standout mechanic is Demon Form, which lets the Warlock transform mid combat and absorb the power of summoned demons. Blizzard’s showcase positions this as one of the class’s headline features, especially when paired with Metamorphosis, an ultimate ability that can allow players to swap between human and demon states in a much more permanent way depending on build choices.

On the seasonal side, Season of Slaughter is clearly designed as a more experimental and aggressive update. Blizzard has officially confirmed that players will be able to become The Butcher for the first time in the series through several activities tied to the new season. The seasonal questline, A Taste of Power, starts in Gea Kul on the Seasonal Realm, while the transformation itself can happen through new Slaughterhouses, through Shrines of Slaughter in Helltide using Meaty Offerings, and through the Ceremony of Slaughter in Fields of Hatred.

Once transformed into The Butcher, players gain access to a full hotbar of Butcher themed abilities and can earn Fresh Meat, a new seasonal resource. Blizzard has also confirmed that Season of Slaughter introduces Killstreaks and Bloodied Items, with the latter acting as a new item quality system for the season. The company says Bloodied Items are tied to Armor, Weapons, and Jewelry through 3 affix categories: Rampage, Feast, and Hunger. Blizzard further notes that Season 12 adds new Unique items, that the Butcher Lair Boss will remain in both seasonal and eternal realms after the season ends, and that Patch 2.6.0 also includes quality of life upgrades such as faster loading, movement speed scaling on traversals, and nightmare dungeon doors opening by default.

This week’s biggest confirmed Diablo IV additions include:

  • Season of Slaughter begins March 11 at 10 a.m. PST

  • Players can become The Butcher through Slaughterhouses, Helltide Shrines of Slaughter, and the Ceremony of Slaughter

  • The free Paladin trial runs from March 11 to March 18 on Battle.net, PlayStation, and Xbox, with progress carrying over if players pre purchase Lord of Hatred

  • Patch 2.6.0 becomes available for early download on March 9 on Battle.net, Xbox, and PlayStation

  • Lord of Hatred launches April 28, 2026 and brings the Warlock class plus broader class and system updates

Blizzard also used the stream to confirm that Lord of Hatred goes beyond just one new class. The company says existing classes are receiving major skill tree changes, with the Druid specifically gaining more control over shapeshifting form choices and the Necromancer teased for a particularly notable update. In addition, Blizzard says the expansion will add roughly twice as many monsters as Vessel of Hatred, including sea monsters, abominations, chimeric creatures, and returning enemies such as the Rat King.

Taken together, Blizzard’s message is clear: Diablo IV is entering a more systems driven phase where seasonal experimentation and expansion scale class design are both being pushed harder. The Warlock looks like one of the game’s most mechanically ambitious classes yet, while Season of Slaughter gives Blizzard room to test far more chaotic ideas through The Butcher transformation, Killstreak momentum, and Bloodied loot. For players looking for a more brutal and aggressive era of Diablo IV, this is easily one of the game’s most interesting updates in months.

What do you think looks more exciting in Diablo IV right now, the Warlock’s demon driven class design or the chance to rampage through Sanctuary as The Butcher?
