Forza Horizon 6’s New Scenic Drive Gameplay Showcases a Beautifully Layered Japan

IGN has kicked off its Forza Horizon 6 coverage with a new 9 minute scenic driving feature that offers one of the clearest looks yet at Playground Games’ take on Japan. The newly released gameplay video follows a relaxed cruise from the southern part of the map through multiple environments, into the outskirts of Tokyo, around the city’s edge, and back north toward one of the game’s permanent race circuits. Based on both IGN’s preview commentary and the footage itself, Forza Horizon 6 appears to be leaning heavily into atmosphere, biome transitions, and scenic free roaming as a core part of its identity.

One of the biggest takeaways from the footage is how varied the map appears to be even within a single uninterrupted drive. The route moves through noticeably different regions without feeling abrupt, which gives the world a more cohesive and natural sense of scale. Tokyo itself only occupies part of the showcase, but the transition into the urban fringe and then back outward helps underline that this will not be a city only driving experience. Playground Games appears to be building a Japan that balances dense roads, open routes, and slower scenic stretches rather than relying on one visual theme alone.

IGN also clarified that the amount of traffic seen in the video was intentionally reduced by Playground Games so viewers could better absorb the world design and environmental detail. That means players should expect a busier road experience in the actual game. This is an important distinction, because the preview is clearly meant to highlight the world itself rather than simulate a normal gameplay session with all of the road activity and distractions that would typically be present during free roam.

The footage was captured using a Saleen S7, although IGN noted that the choice was largely incidental rather than representative of the game’s headline vehicle. The actual cover car remains the Toyota GR GT, but IGN explained that it could not yet be shown in gameplay because final manufacturer clearance had not been completed. That kind of limitation is common in licensed racing games, though it also means there is still more to see from Forza Horizon 6 as Xbox and Playground continue the marketing rollout.

Another interesting detail from IGN’s early coverage is that Playground has reportedly built dedicated experiences for players who simply want to drive without a strict objective. That matters because Forza Horizon has long attracted an audience that treats the series less like a structured racer and more like a driving sandbox. If Forza Horizon 6 is actively designing around that “vibe drive” audience, then this scenic gameplay video may be one of the clearest examples yet of the studio’s broader design philosophy for this entry. IGN also said Horizon Edition and Forza Edition cars are returning with meaningful improvements, though it stopped short of explaining what those changes will look like in practice.

As for release timing, Forza Horizon 6 is officially scheduled to launch on May 19, 2026 for PC and Xbox Series X|S, with Early Access for Premium Edition owners beginning on May 15. A PlayStation 5 version is also planned for later this year, marking another major step in Xbox’s broader multiplatform strategy. With that launch window now approaching, this scenic drive preview likely represents the start of a much larger wave of coverage focused on cars, customization, events, and the overall structure of Playground’s latest open world racer.

What do you think of Forza Horizon 6’s Japan so far, and are you more excited for the Tokyo driving experience or the more relaxed scenic roads across the rest of the map?
