Aurogon Shanghai Announces New Gujian RPG Swords of Legends at Gamescom ONL 2025
Developer Aurogon Shanghai has officially unveiled Swords of Legends, a brand-new entry in the long-running Gujian RPG series, during the Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025 pre-show. The reveal came with a striking trailer showcasing the title’s action-oriented combat and a taste of its massive boss encounters.
A Familiar Yet Unique Experience
At first glance, Swords of Legends looks like it could sit comfortably among the Soulslike genre, with dramatic boss fights and imposing enemy designs reminiscent of Dark Souls, Sekiro, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring. However, Aurogon Shanghai was quick to emphasize that the game should not be considered a Soulslike.
In a published FAQ, the studio explained:
“Swords of Legends is not a Soulslike game as the gameplay is designed to ensure players of all skill levels will enjoy combining all the unique combat skills. We are building the game around its own distinct identity. Instead of focusing purely on punishing encounters, Swords of Legends introduces unique core mechanics that give players more strategic options.”
What We Know So Far
While much of the game’s systems and story remain under wraps, the trailer highlighted fast-paced melee combat, magical attacks, and highly cinematic boss encounters that could appeal to fans of action-RPGs who prefer a balance between challenge and accessibility.
Aurogon Shanghai’s Gujian series has historically blended Chinese mythology with high-fantasy storytelling, and Swords of Legends looks set to continue that legacy while modernizing gameplay for a global audience.
No release date or specific platforms were confirmed, though Aurogon Shanghai did state the game is planned for PC and consoles.
A New Contender in the Action-RPG Space
Though it distances itself from being labeled a Soulslike, Swords of Legends is arriving at a time when demand for epic action RPGs is at an all-time high. Whether it will strike a balance between accessibility and depth, or lean further toward punishing encounters, will likely define its reception among both Gujian veterans and newcomers.
For now, all eyes are on Aurogon Shanghai as they continue development on one of Gamescom 2025’s most intriguing new announcements.
Do you think Swords of Legends should embrace its Soulslike comparisons, or carve out its own unique identity in the action-RPG genre?
