Xenomorph, a Spiritual Successor to Alien vs Predator for Atari Jaguar, Announced by Athena Worlds
UK-based game studio Athena Worlds has officially announced Xenomorph, a new stealth-survival title described as a spiritual successor to the iconic Alien vs Predator game released for the Atari Jaguar in 1994. The announcement marks a long-awaited return to the genre from Jane Whittaker, one of the original developers of the 1994 AvP classic, who shared the news on his X account, confirming that production is now underway.
“You have been asking me for a personal sequel to our Atari AvP for 30 years…” Whittaker wrote. “Funding, team in place. Production underway!” The post included a piece of key art featuring the unmistakable double-jawed visage of a Xenomorph, poised in a menacing stance—an immediate visual callback for fans of the original title.
Whittaker, who now serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Athena Worlds, also shared his emotional connection to the project in a press release, calling Xenomorph a deeply personal endeavor. “So many people still talk about our work on AvP to this day, with a massive following. I have been asked for over 30 years to create my next survival and stealth strategy game. I am beyond thrilled to say that thanks to generous support, my day has come,” he said.
While the project is still in early development, Athena Worlds has confirmed that Xenomorph is being built for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms. No release window has been announced yet, but the team has begun assembling a solid development roster. Mike Meaden has been tapped as the creative lead, and Blaire Wathen will head up character design—bringing fresh creative talent to a title with deep roots in retro gaming history.
The game’s setting has also been teased in the announcement. Players will find themselves on planet XL-243, following a harrowing crash landing that kicks off a desperate battle for survival. The team at Athena Worlds describes the experience as an “open world game of exploration, survival, high stakes tension and combat,” promising a dynamic and immersive gameplay loop that honors its legacy while pushing genre boundaries forward.
Drawing inspiration from the atmospheric tension and methodical pacing that made the original AvP a cult classic, Xenomorph aims to build a modern survival experience steeped in stealth mechanics, sci-fi horror, and strategic combat. As an entirely original IP not tied to the official Alien or Predator franchises, it offers the creative team the freedom to evolve the genre while still resonating with the nostalgia of the original Jaguar title.
