Xbox Series S Limited to 30 FPS for Turok: Origins, Developer Confirms

At Gamescom 2025, Saber Interactive Madrid revealed more details about its upcoming cooperative shooter Turok: Origins. Game Director Jesús Iglesias confirmed that the title will run at 60 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but the same performance target won’t be achievable on the Xbox Series S. Instead, Microsoft’s budget console will run the game at 30 FPS.

This revelation came during a presentation where Iglesias was asked specifically about the Xbox Series S. “We simply found no way to make that happen,” he admitted, acknowledging that the hardware limitations of the smaller console couldn’t sustain 60 FPS even for a relatively linear, round-based co-op shooter.

The performance gap isn’t surprising given the hardware differences between the Series S and its more powerful sibling:

  • Memory: 10GB (Series S) vs 16GB (Series X)

  • Compute Units: 20 (Series S) vs 52 (Series X)

  • Teraflops: ~4 TFLOPs (Series S) vs ~12 TFLOPs (Series X)

These constraints have often made life difficult for developers, who have voiced frustration with Microsoft’s requirement that games must support both versions of its consoles. While the Series S offers a lower-cost entry point into the Xbox ecosystem, it has rarely driven significant sales, and compromises in performance continue to surface.

Turok: Origins is being developed on Unreal Engine 5, though Iglesias noted that the game’s design “a cooperative shooter with linear, round-based levels”. not pushing the boundaries of next-gen visuals in the way large-scale open-world UE5 projects do. Even so, the Series S is unable to match the 60 FPS performance level set for its counterparts.

Saber Interactive is self-publishing Turok: Origins, though no release window has been provided yet. PC system requirements are also pending, leaving fans to wait for more clarity on how the game will perform across platforms outside of the console ecosystem.
