Valheim Leaves Early Access on September 9, 2026 as 1.0 Adds Deep North, PlayStation 5, and Switch 2

Iron Gate and Coffee Stain Publishing have officially confirmed that Valheim will leave Early Access on September 9, 2026, bringing one of the most successful survival games of the last decade to its full 1.0 release after 5 years of public development. The announcement was made during the PC Gaming Show as part of Summer Game Fest 2026, giving longtime players a clear date for the end of Valheim’s Early Access journey. The game first launched in Early Access in 2021 and quickly became one of the biggest breakout hits in the survival genre, building a massive community around Viking exploration, base building, crafting, dangerous biomes, and cooperative adventure.

The 1.0 launch will also bring Valheim to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, meaning the game will finally be available across the last 2 major platforms it had not yet reached outside of mobile. Full cross play will be supported across every platform, allowing PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox, and PC players to explore together without platform barriers.

That is a major step for a game built around shared survival stories. Valheim’s strongest moments often come from players building settlements together, sailing into unknown waters, preparing for boss fights, and barely surviving hostile environments as a group. With full cross play, the 1.0 launch gives new and returning players a much easier way to connect across platforms.

The full release will also introduce the Deep North, a new biome that marks a major addition to the world. According to the official Steam announcement, the new biome will bring new enemies to kill, bases to build, and weapons to craft. This makes Deep North more than a simple environmental expansion. It is positioned as a full survival challenge built around new threats, new progression, and new reasons to return to the world.

The new biome will immediately test players with freezing conditions. A massive snowstorm greets adventurers as they take their first steps into the Deep North, limiting visibility and reinforcing the sense that this is one of Valheim’s most hostile regions yet. However, the danger does not stop at the surface. Iron Gate also confirmed that players will discover a deep underground network of tunnels waiting beneath the snow, adding another layer of exploration to the biome.

Robin Eyre, creative director at Iron Gate, reflected on the long journey from the game’s Early Access debut to its full release.

"When we set out on this journey back in 2021, we could hardly imagine the amount of players that would dive in, and the size of the community that would form around the game. Approaching 1.0 feels equal parts exciting and anxious as we’ve worked hard to make Deep North a worthy conclusion to the Valheim journey!"
— Robin Eyre

That statement captures the pressure behind the 1.0 milestone. Valheim has not been a small Early Access project quietly moving toward completion. It became a major survival game phenomenon, and its full release now carries years of player expectation. The Deep North needs to feel like a meaningful conclusion to the core Valheim journey while also giving players enough new content to justify returning after years of updates.

The addition of PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 versions also gives Valheim a major second wave opportunity. Many players have already experienced the game on PC or Xbox, but the launch on new platforms could introduce the survival adventure to a much wider console audience. Switch 2 in particular could be a strong fit for Valheim’s exploration and building loop, especially for players who enjoy portable survival games.

For survival fans, Valheim’s 1.0 release is more than a version number. It marks the completion of a long development arc that began with a small Early Access launch and grew into one of the most influential cooperative survival games of its generation. With Deep North, full cross play, new enemies, new crafting, new building opportunities, and expanded platform support, Iron Gate is preparing a major final step for the game’s original roadmap.

Valheim leaves Early Access on September 9, 2026 for PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Will you return to Valheim for the Deep North biome, or will PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 be your first time entering the world?
