Total War Medieval III Officially Enters Early Development as Creative Assembly Unveils Warcore Engine and Teases Console Support

Creative Assembly has officially confirmed that Total War Medieval III is now in early development, marking the franchise’s long awaited return to one of its most beloved historical eras. The announcement came during the studio’s 25th anniversary showcase, viewable here via Creative Assembly’s livestream, where the team outlined its renewed commitment to grounded, systems driven historical Total War experiences.

According to the official announcement article, Medieval III will emphasize the political, religious, and feudal power structures that defined medieval Europe and its surrounding regions. Creative Assembly noted that this installment aims to move beyond pure territorial expansion and map painting in favor of deeper societal simulation, factional dynamics, and more nuanced strategic decision making. The game’s scope will concentrate on medieval Europe and adjacent territories rather than spanning the entire globe, reinforcing the studio’s design intent to deliver a sharper, more cohesive historical experience.

The project is being built on Warcore, Creative Assembly’s next generation engine technology designed to power the future of the Total War series. Warcore represents an evolution of the studio’s long running engine and is engineered to scale across platforms including PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. While the team confirmed its ambition to finally bring Total War to consoles, it reaffirmed that high end PC strategy remains the cornerstone of the franchise and that large scale battles and advanced simulation will continue to define the series. Creative Assembly shared an early tech preview of Warcore.

Although Medieval III was the highlight of the showcase, Creative Assembly revealed a substantial amount of new content across the Total War ecosystem. For fantasy fans, the premium Tides of Torment DLC for Total War WARHAMMER III is now available introducing three new Legendary Lords spanning the High Elves, Norsca, and Slaanesh factions. The studio also announced the forthcoming Lords of The End Times Pack, arriving in Summer 2026, which adds four additional Legendary Lords to the ever expanding Immortal Empires campaign. The first previewed lord is the iconic necromancer Nagash, returning to reclaim dominion and reshape the world in undeath.

These additions accompany the free End Times Update, an ambitious overhaul drawing inspiration from Warhammer lore. The update will introduce apocalyptic scenarios, escalating strategic challenges, world altering cataclysms, and a new Legendary Lord who will rise amid the chaos. Immortal Empires itself is now free for all Total War WARHAMMER I and II owners, further expanding accessibility ahead of these major updates.

Creative Assembly also hinted at a significant reveal coming soon. An unannounced Total War project described as the next major release in one of the most ambitious games in Total War’s history will be unveiled at The Game Awards next week. According to the studio this marks the beginning of a bold new era for the franchise.

With Medieval III’s development underway, Warcore defining the next technological foundation of the franchise, and multiple large scale expansions on the horizon, Total War is entering a transformative phase that spans both its historical and fantasy pillars.
