The Witcher 3 Surpasses 65 Million Copies Sold as CD Projekt RED Expands Work on The Witcher 4

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has reached another major commercial milestone, with CD Projekt RED confirming in its latest Q1 2026 financial report that the game has now surpassed 65 million copies sold worldwide. More than a decade after its original 2015 release, the RPG continues to generate remarkable momentum, reinforcing just how powerful the franchise remains as CD Projekt prepares its newly announced Songs of the Past expansion for 2027.

That number is especially significant because it shows The Witcher 3 is still moving at a high level long after its original launch cycle ended. CD Projekt had previously said in 2023 that the game had crossed 50 million copies sold, meaning it added roughly 15 million more units over the following three years. That kind of long tail performance helps explain why the company moved forward with a full new expansion instead of treating the title as a finished chapter. It also shows that Geralt’s journey still has substantial market strength even as the franchise prepares to move deeper into its next era.

CD Projekt RED formally announced Songs of the Past on May 27, confirming that it will launch in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The studio is co developing the expansion with Fool’s Theory, a team that includes veterans who previously worked on The Witcher 3. That positioning makes the project feel much bigger than a small nostalgic add on. Instead, it looks like a meaningful return to one of the most celebrated RPGs of the modern era, arriving at a time when the brand is still proving it can sell at an elite level.

At the same time, CD Projekt is continuing to put more resources behind The Witcher 4. In the company’s latest staffing breakdown, total developers across active projects increased from 933 on February 28, 2026 to 975 on April 30, 2026. Of that total, 513 developers are now assigned to The Witcher 4, up from 499 in the prior snapshot. That makes it by far the company’s largest active production, comfortably ahead of Cyberpunk 2, Sirius, and Hadar.

The broader staffing picture shows how CD Projekt is balancing its portfolio. As of April 30, 2026, Cyberpunk 2 had 163 developers, Sirius had 83, Hadar had 24, while 173 were assigned to shared services and 19 to other work. In other words, while the studio is still supporting multiple large scale projects, The Witcher 4 remains the clear strategic priority inside the company. That is an important signal for players and investors alike, because it suggests CD Projekt is steadily intensifying production on its next flagship release while using Songs of the Past to keep engagement around The Witcher 3 strong in the meantime.

This combination creates an unusually strong position for the franchise. On one side, The Witcher 3 continues to sell like a living evergreen release rather than a catalog title. On the other, CD Projekt is actively scaling The Witcher 4 with more headcount as it builds the future of the series. That means Songs of the Past is not simply filler between major launches. It looks more like a commercially smart bridge that keeps Geralt relevant, maintains community momentum, and gives the studio another high value touchpoint before the next mainline game fully arrives.

If The Witcher 3 was already able to add around 15 million copies in roughly three years without a newly released expansion, the next sales milestone may come faster once Songs of the Past enters full marketing and pre launch visibility. CD Projekt now has one of the rarest assets in modern gaming: a 2015 RPG that still sells at a premium scale while its sequel era is actively ramping up. That is exactly the kind of brand power most publishers spend years trying to build and almost never fully achieve.

What do you think, can Songs of the Past push The Witcher 3 to an even bigger late life surge before The Witcher 4 finally takes center stage?
