Bloober Team’s Psychological Horror The Medium Is Being Adapted Into a Film by It and Annabelle Producer Gary Dauberman

The Medium, the atmospheric psychological horror game released in 2021 by Bloober Team, is officially being adapted into a feature film, and horror fans should recognize the name behind the project: Gary Dauberman, the writer and producer of recent box office hits It and Annabelle. The announcement, first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, marks another notable crossover between the video game and film industries, and could see The Medium transition its signature dual-reality tension to the silver screen.

While Dauberman will produce the adaptation through his production company Coin Operated, alongside the company’s president Mia Maniscalco, he won’t be penning the script or directing the project himself. Instead, Dauberman is currently seeking the right writer and director to bring The Medium’s terrifying narrative to life.

“With its compelling story and incredibly cinematic visuals, The Medium is a natural for a feature film adaptation,” Dauberman said in his comments to The Hollywood Reporter. “When I talked to Piotr [Babieno] about it, we immediately connected on our mutual love of horror and his vision for where the genre is headed. I have no doubt anything Bloober develops is going to push horror forward in unique and terrifying ways, and I’m excited to be working alongside them.”

Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno expressed similar excitement, noting the strong alignment between the two parties. “Adapting games into films often involves balancing many interests, but with The Medium, I have a deep sense that Gary is the perfect partner for us. From our very first conversation, I felt we were completely in sync. And every conversation since has only reinforced that feeling.”

Dauberman is no stranger to game-to-screen adaptations, having recently worked on the Until Dawn adaptation, though that project failed to resonate with audiences, as reflected in its lukewarm reception. The success of The Medium’s adaptation will likely hinge on who is chosen to script and direct, given the original game’s heavy psychological tone, layered storytelling, and surreal horror visuals—elements that could shine in a film if handled with care.

Interestingly, this film announcement casts uncertainty over the previously announced The Medium TV series, which was revealed in 2022. With no recent updates, and with the focus now shifting to a feature film, it's widely assumed that the series has quietly been shelved—a fate not uncommon in Hollywood's ever-evolving development pipelines.

Whether the film adaptation succeeds or not, it reaffirms a continued industry trend: the blending of cinematic horror and interactive storytelling. With The Medium’s deeply atmospheric themes, psychological horror fans may yet get a film that stands out—if the right creative team steps in.

What are your thoughts on The Medium becoming a movie? Should it have remained a game-only experience, or does it have the potential to become the next great horror adaptation? Let us know your thoughts!
