The Elder Scrolls VI Finally Gets A New Status Check From Xbox
After 8 years of silence since its first teaser, The Elder Scrolls VI has finally received a small but important update from Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty.
Bethesda first revealed The Elder Scrolls VI at E3 2018, during the same showcase where Todd Howard also teased Starfield. At the time, the move helped reassure fans that Bethesda was not abandoning single player RPGs while preparing to launch Fallout 76.
Since then, Bethesda has kept the project mostly quiet. Howard has repeatedly made it clear that he prefers not to show games until they are much closer to release, which is one reason The Elder Scrolls VI has become one of the most anticipated and least discussed RPGs in the industry. That changed slightly this week. In a new interview with Variety, Booty confirmed that he has visited Bethesda, sat with Todd Howard, and seen The Elder Scrolls VI running.
"It looks amazing, and it’s coming along well."

Booty also explained why Xbox is still waiting before showing the game publicly. According to him, a reveal carries a promise that the game is coming soon, so Microsoft and Bethesda want to wait until the right moment.
"When you decide to show it, you want it to be the best you’ve got."

The update does not mean The Elder Scrolls VI is close to launch. Bethesda has not announced a release date, platforms, gameplay details, or a full reveal window.
A 2027 launch is possible, but still far from guaranteed. Starfield launched in September 2023, and Bethesda’s next major RPG is expected to be a much larger technical step forward. Earlier this year, Howard confirmed through a Kinda Funny Gamescast appearance, that The Elder Scrolls VI is being built on Creation Engine 3.
That technology upgrade is meant to improve rendering, loading, world systems, and how Bethesda handles scale. For a series built around exploration, world density, and player freedom, that engine work may matter as much as the setting itself.
This is not the full reveal fans have been waiting for, but it is still meaningful. The Elder Scrolls VI is no longer just a logo from 2018. Xbox leadership has seen it running, and Bethesda is clearly still moving the project forward.
The bigger question is timing. Microsoft wants major first party games to carry Xbox momentum, but Bethesda does not want to repeat the mistake of showing too much too early. That tension explains why the game remains quiet even after 8 years.
For now, the safest expectation is simple. The Elder Scrolls VI is progressing, but a real reveal will likely happen only when Bethesda is ready to attach the game to a clearer launch window.
Do you think Bethesda should reveal The Elder Scrolls VI soon, or wait until the game is close to release?
