The developer of Ghost of Yōtei does not rule out DLC

With Ghost of Yōtei now released to widespread attention, Sucker Punch Productions is entering its post-launch phase, a time for reflection, feedback, and, potentially, new ideas. In an interview with Game Informer, co-director Jason Connell discussed the future of the game and its characters, including the possibility of a downloadable expansion (DLC). While he didn’t confirm anything outright, Connell’s remarks leave the door open for Ghost of Yōtei to follow in Ghost of Tsushima’s footsteps with a major post-launch addition.

Connell emphasized that the studio’s current focus is on understanding how players connect with the world and protagonist Atsu, rather than rushing into development of new content. “I think for us, we are at the spot in the project where we just get to put it out there and see what's resonating with people and what people love and what people feel like they wish they maybe knew more about Atsu,” Connell said.

He added, “You get this rare opportunity to actually listen to millions of people about what resonated within a story versus maybe what didn't or what are the holes. Certainly we love Atsu, and we think it's a great character. And just like with Jin [Sakai], if there’s room to improve or bring some new elements to life for narrative clarity and it falls within what’s best for Sucker Punch, then we’ll certainly take a hard look at that for sure.”

Sucker Punch has precedent for this approach. Following the release of Ghost of Tsushima, the studio launched the Iki Island expansion roughly one year later, coinciding with the Director’s Cut release on PlayStation 5. That DLC added a substantial new chapter to Jin Sakai’s story, expanding both the gameplay and lore of the samurai epic. Players ventured to Iki Island to face a Mongol shaman and her forces, discovering new side quests, combat techniques, and exploration features, including the ability to charge enemies on horseback and interact with animal sanctuaries.

If Ghost of Yōtei does receive a DLC, it’s reasonable to expect something similar in scope and format: a story expansion featuring a new region, narrative arc, and gameplay additions that deepen Atsu’s character and the broader world of Yōtei. Much will depend on the game’s ongoing performance, but early signs suggest it’s off to a strong start.

While Sony has yet to share official sales figures, data from Alinea Analytics indicates that Ghost of Yōtei is selling nearly as fast as Ghost of Tsushima did upon launch, an impressive feat considering the original benefited from a larger install base and the unique circumstances of the 2020 lockdown period.

Given the success of Sucker Punch’s storytelling model and the studio’s willingness to expand on popular narratives, fans may very well have more of Atsu’s journey to look forward to in the near future.
