EVE Online: Catalyst Is the Sci-Fi MMO’s Next Expansion, and CCP Reckons It Will Spark a New Resource Rush

CCP Games has officially announced EVE Online: Catalyst, the next major expansion for its iconic 22-year-old space MMO. Set to launch on November 18, Catalyst aims to reignite the heart of EVE’s player-driven economy by transforming mining into a more dynamic and strategic endeavor. The developers believe this update will usher in a new “resource rush” across New Eden, reshaping the landscape of exploration, industry, and player conflict.

From a lore perspective, Catalyst centers on the aftermath of a failed experiment involving the mysterious Drifter Gates, which has destabilized spacetime and triggered the appearance of Hyperspace Fractures throughout New Eden. These fleeting rifts reveal Phased Asteroids, which contain Prismaticite, a volatile new resource that reprocesses into random minerals in varying quantities. To harvest it effectively, Outer Ring Excavations engineers have developed Phase Anchor technology, a deployable system that stabilizes fractured asteroids for coordinated mining operations.

Bergur Finnbogason, EVE Online’s Creative Director, described the expansion’s design philosophy:
“Mining is the foundation of all activity in EVE, and with Catalyst, it becomes the forefront of power. We’re reenergizing the mining experience, making it far more dynamic, social, and rewarding. To master the universe, you must master its materials. Whether you build or destroy, it all begins with ore.”

Snorri Árnason, Executive Producer, expanded on how this shift will impact player interaction:
“At face value, ore may seem unremarkable, yet it is the hidden catalyst of EVE’s biggest dramas. Creation, conflict, destruction, and rebirth – it’s the center of the eternal cycle of New Eden. But where valuable resources appear, so do rival capsuleers, turning mining operations into contested battlegrounds. Players will once again field the mightiest mining ships in pursuit of extraordinary resources, as well as the brand-new Pioneer and Odysseus when Catalyst launches on November 18.”

In gameplay terms, Catalyst introduces several new mechanics and systems designed to make mining more interactive. Players will venture into Hyperspace Fractures to locate Phased Asteroids and extract Prismaticite. They can either rely on random reprocessing results or choose a specific base mineral to influence the outcome, offering more agency in shaping New Eden’s industrial economy.

Two new ships join the fleet with this expansion:

  • Pioneer Mining Destroyer – a versatile entry-level mining vessel accessible to Alpha clones, with advanced configurations available for Omega players.

  • Odysseus Exploration Command Ship – a powerful, long-range ship optimized for deep-space expeditions, allowing veteran explorers to conduct extended missions beyond the known reaches of space.

Mining cycles have been revamped for faster pacing and greater immersion, accompanied by an upgraded scanning overlay and a new 2D ore availability map. The map now includes improved system visualization, dual data overlays, customizable scales, and enhanced readability, helping players plan navigation routes and mining strategies more efficiently.

In addition, CCP is enhancing transparency in the in-game economy with PLEX transaction logs, alongside balance updates and visual improvements to Empire carriers. Together, these refinements aim to strengthen both EVE’s economic depth and its large-scale PvP and industrial gameplay.

The launch of Catalyst follows last month’s successful Operation Nemesis, which linked EVE Online with EVE Vanguard, allowing players of both games to influence the same persistent universe, an ambitious step toward CCP’s long-standing goal of full interconnectivity between its titles.

With mining once again at the center of the galaxy’s chaos, Catalyst promises to reinvigorate one of EVE’s oldest professions, transforming it into a high-stakes, competitive frontier where fortune and danger coexist in equal measure.
