The Blood of Dawnwalker Will Offer Fallout 1 and 2 Levels of Freedom, Says Developer
Rebel Wolves, the independent Polish studio founded in 2022 by former CD Projekt RED developers, is deep in production on The Blood of Dawnwalker, its debut open world action roleplaying game. Published by Bandai Namco and financially supported in part by NetEase, the project has often drawn early comparisons to The Witcher III Wild Hunt due to the studio’s legacy. However, according to the developers, its structure and player agency will differ dramatically from traditional CD Projekt RED storytelling.
In a recent interview with Eurogamer at the Golden Joystick Awards 2025, Game Director Konrad Tomaskiewicz revealed that The Blood of Dawnwalker will not feature a main quest at all. Instead, players will construct their own narrative path based on the quests, factions and decisions they choose to engage with.
“There is no main quest,” Tomaskiewicz said. “You build your experience from the quests you encounter. You know where your enemy is. You can attack this place anytime you want. It is up to you if you want to do it by yourself, or if you want to build yourself, find powerful items, develop your character or do some quests and find allies to help you do it. We want to bring video games closer to pen and paper RPGs and give you the freedom to experience what you want to experience.”
When asked whether this structure resembled Warhorse Studios’ Kingdom Come Deliverance, Tomaskiewicz pointed to a different inspiration. While acknowledging similarities, he stated that The Blood of Dawnwalker aligns more closely with the design philosophy behind Fallout 1 and Fallout 2, which gave players a single overarching goal while allowing complete freedom in how to pursue it.
“Kingdom Come Deliverance is not a bad example, but still they have the main story that develops. In our game it is different. Our game is more similar to the old Fallout games, the first and second ones, where you have a clear goal and everything is optional. You decide. You travel the world, and you decide what you want to do. There is no main quest.”
Rebel Wolves has previously emphasized that The Blood of Dawnwalker will feature strong roleplaying elements, including meaningful consequences for both player action and inaction. These design pillars, combined with the absence of a central questline, aim to deliver a more open ended roleplaying experience that recalls the freedom of classic CRPGs and tabletop campaigns.
The Blood of Dawnwalker continues to be one of the most anticipated new RPGs in development, due in part to the team’s pedigree and its promise of deep systemic storytelling. With its non linear structure, high stakes choice design and renewed focus on player agency, the game appears to be charting a distinctive path in the modern open world RPG landscape.
