Team Cherry Announces Hollow Knight Silksong Sea of Sorrow, A Free DLC Expansion Arriving in 2026
Team Cherry has officially announced the first downloadable content expansion for Hollow Knight Silksong, confirming that Sea of Sorrow will launch in 2026 as a completely free update for all players across every platform. The announcement was made via an official studio update on the Team Cherry blog, marking a significant milestone following Silksong’s long awaited release earlier this year.
According to Team Cherry, Hollow Knight Silksong Sea of Sorrow is already well into development and represents the studio’s first major post launch expansion for the game. The DLC will introduce a nautically themed adventure, expanding the world of Silksong with new regions, enemies, tools, and bosses, all centered around a water focused setting that has not yet been explored in depth within the game.
The initial teaser trailer, does not feature gameplay footage but showcases new artwork that reinforces the melancholic and atmospheric tone fans have come to expect from Team Cherry. The teaser description confirms the core premise, inviting players to voyage across and beneath salt stricken seas in a new and dangerous expansion that will be provided at no additional cost.
In its blog post, Team Cherry reflected on the scale of Silksong’s success since launch. The studio revealed that Hollow Knight Silksong has sold more than seven million copies to date, with millions more players accessing the game through Xbox Game Pass. Team Cherry described the response as far beyond expectations, noting that the launch surge was large enough to temporarily overwhelm multiple digital storefronts.
The developers also expressed appreciation for the community that has formed around Silksong, highlighting fan art, mods, unconventional strategies, and the support players have shown one another while tackling the game’s challenges. Team Cherry emphasized that this continued enthusiasm has been a major motivator behind expanding Silksong further, with Sea of Sorrow being described as the first big expansion in what is now a broader post launch roadmap.
Beyond the DLC announcement, Team Cherry also confirmed that Hollow Knight will make its debut on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026. This version will include all the updates and enhancements that Silksong has received on the platform, including higher resolutions, high frame rate modes, and additional graphical effects. As with previous platform upgrades, the Switch 2 version will be offered as a free update for existing owners.
PC players are not left out of the improvements. Team Cherry confirmed that a public beta branch is now live on Steam and GOG, allowing players to test new updates immediately. These include support for sixteen by ten and twenty one by nine ultrawide displays, giving players with modern monitor setups the opportunity to experience Silksong with expanded aspect ratios ahead of the full rollout.
While Sea of Sorrow does not yet have a specific release date beyond its 2026 window, Team Cherry stated that more details will be shared shortly before launch. The studio reaffirmed that the expansion will deliver substantial new content rather than a minor add on, reinforcing confidence that Silksong’s post launch support is only just beginning.
Given that Hollow Knight Silksong itself began life years ago as a much smaller expansion concept before growing into a full standalone game, the announcement of a free DLC arriving so soon after release underscores Team Cherry’s long term commitment to the franchise. After years of anticipation, the studio appears determined to maintain momentum and reward the patience of its community.
With Sea of Sorrow now confirmed, fans can look ahead to 2026 knowing that the world of Silksong will continue to grow in meaningful ways, without additional cost barriers.
