Take Two Explains Why GTA 6 Hits Consoles First, Saying Rockstar Is “Judged by Serving the Core”

Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has now given the clearest public explanation yet for why Grand Theft Auto VI is launching first on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with PC once again left waiting. In a new interview with Bloomberg, Zelnick said Rockstar begins with consoles because that is where the company believes its core audience still sits, and because a launch of this size is ultimately judged on how well it serves that audience first.

The key quote is the one that is already fueling debate across the gaming space. Zelnick said, “Rockstar always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that you’re judged by serving the core,” before adding that Rockstar wants to serve the core consumer “first and best.” He also made it clear that this console first rollout is not being driven by any special platform arrangement, saying it is simply how Rockstar has historically handled major releases.

That answer is significant because it cuts through years of speculation from players who assumed Rockstar and Take Two were holding the PC version back for more commercial reasons, including a possible double purchase cycle across console and PC. Zelnick’s explanation does not fully erase those theories for everyone, but it does establish the official line very clearly: Rockstar sees console players as the core audience it must satisfy first, and everything else follows after that.

What makes the explanation more interesting is that Zelnick also reportedly acknowledged how important PC has become to Take Two’s business. In the same interview cycle, he noted that PC used to represent a much smaller share of sales for some Take Two releases, but that large titles today can see PC contribute as much as 45% to 50% of sales. That means the delayed PC launch is not happening because the platform is too small to matter. If anything, it suggests Rockstar is making a deliberate launch priority decision even while knowing just how valuable PC has become.

From a production standpoint, that likely reflects the sheer scale and risk surrounding GTA 6. Bloomberg’s report frames the game as one of the biggest entertainment launches of all time, with expectations that Zelnick himself described as “terrifying.” With pressure that high, Rockstar appears to be concentrating on the launch environment it knows best and where it believes execution will be judged most harshly. In other words, this looks less like a technical impossibility and more like a strategic narrowing of focus at the most critical stage.

For PC players, though, the message will still sting. Rockstar’s biggest launch in years is once again treating PC as the second wave instead of day one priority, even at a time when the platform has become too large to dismiss as a niche afterthought. That is why Zelnick’s comments are likely to be read in 2 very different ways. For investors and executives, it sounds like disciplined launch management. For many PC players, it sounds like another reminder that they are still not considered part of Rockstar’s first line audience.

The bigger industry takeaway is that Rockstar is still operating with a very old school blockbuster mindset even in a market that has changed dramatically. Many major publishers now try to hit console and PC together whenever possible, especially for titles with truly massive demand. Rockstar, by contrast, is still leaning into a staged release cadence built around console first impact. Whether that approach remains smart or outdated will only become clearer once GTA 6 actually launches and the waiting game for PC begins again.

One thing is certain: Take Two is no longer being vague about the reasoning. According to Zelnick, consoles come first because that is where Rockstar believes the core is, and in a launch this large, serving that core is what the company believes matters most.
