Take a Look at Path Traced GTA 4 from an RTX Remix Test Build
The legendary Grand Theft Auto IV, first released in 2008, is getting a remarkable new visual upgrade through the power of NVIDIA RTX Remix. Modder xoxor4d, well-known for bringing RTX Remix compatibility to classic PC titles, has unveiled an initial test build that adds path tracing to GTA 4, offering a stunning new look at Liberty City powered by full ray-traced lighting.
This early version of the RTX Remix compatibility build is currently available exclusively to Patreon subscribers at the Chocolate Strawberry Advocate Tester tier ($10 monthly) or higher. ResetEra user gabdeg tested the mod and shared several screenshots, noting that the images do not fully convey how much path tracing enhances GTA 4’s lighting and atmosphere. These visual improvements were achieved without altering the game’s original textures, showcasing how transformative modern lighting can be on its own.
xoxor4d has previously brought RTX Remix support to other major games, including Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Portal 2, and Left 4 Dead 2. Their work on Left 4 Dead 2 RTX NTD was particularly praised for remaking the No Mercy campaign with cinematic-quality path tracing and reflections.
In the RTX Remix Compatibility Mods Discord, xoxor4d shared additional technical information for those eager to try out GTA 4 with RTX features. The mod requires the Complete Edition (1.2.0.59) of the game, available through both Steam and the Rockstar Games Launcher. While both versions are supported, xoxor4d recommends using the Rockstar Games version since it tends to have fewer issues, especially when running in windowed mode. Players running in fullscreen can safely use the Steam version.
The mod is also compatible with Fusion Fix, a well-known GTA 4 enhancement tool that resolves numerous bugs and adds valuable features such as a Field of View slider, motion blur and bloom toggles, and an FPS limiter. However, xoxor4d cautioned that combining both mods may cause conflicts. They plan to compile and release a specialized Fusion Fix version optimized for use with the RTX Remix compatibility mod in the near future.
According to xoxor4d, the public release of the RTX Remix compatibility mod is not expected before the end of this month. Considering the impressive progress shown in past projects, GTA 4 fans can look forward to one of the most striking visual overhauls ever created for the game.
