Sucker Punch Celebrated GTA VI Delay: “That Was a Great Day,” Says Creative Director
When Rockstar Games announced that Grand Theft Auto VI would be delayed from 2025 to 2026, the news was bittersweet. While fans were disappointed to wait longer for one of the most anticipated games in history, developers across the industry quietly breathed a sigh of relief. Few studios wanted their release window to collide with a cultural juggernaut like GTA VI.
One such studio was Sucker Punch, currently preparing for the launch of its next major PlayStation exclusive, Ghost of Yotei. In a rapid-fire interview with MinnMax, creative director Nate Fox was asked if the delay sparked celebrations at the studio. His candid reply left little doubt:
“We’re all still hungover. Multi-month hangover. That was a great day,” Fox said with a smile.
The timing of the delay means that Ghost of Yotei, set to launch on October 2, 2025, will avoid going head-to-head with Rockstar’s blockbuster. Had GTA VI launched as originally scheduled, it would have dominated the fall 2025 release calendar, overshadowing even the biggest titles. Instead, Sucker Punch and other studios launching later this year now have more breathing room to shine.
However, any developers planning a 2026 release may still find themselves competing directly with Rockstar. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently emphasized that he has a “very, very high” conviction in GTA VI’s current release date, suggesting it is unlikely to shift again.
Sucker Punch also confirmed that Ghost of Yotei has officially gone gold, meaning development is complete and the game is ready for manufacturing. For PlayStation fans, this ensures the October release date is locked in, giving them a highly anticipated samurai-inspired adventure well before GTA VI storms the scene the following year.
Do you think GTA VI’s delay will give Ghost of Yotei and other fall 2025 releases the spotlight they deserve, or will players simply keep waiting for Rockstar’s giant?
