Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Is Still in Development, Saber Says
After years of uncertainty, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake has received a small but important status update. In a new interview with IGN, Saber Interactive chief creative officer Tim Willits confirmed that the long silent project is still alive. His response was brief, but it was enough to give fans a long overdue sign that the remake has not been canceled. “Yes, it is still in development. That’s all I can say.”
That limited statement may not sound like much, but for this project it matters. The remake was first announced in 2021 for PlayStation 5 and PC, yet since its reveal trailer there has been almost no concrete public progress to show. Over the years, the game became one of the most questioned major projects in the industry, especially after reports of development trouble, internal changes, and growing fears that it may have quietly stalled out for good. Saber’s latest confirmation does not answer those bigger questions, but it does officially keep the project in play.
The silence around the remake has been one of the biggest reasons concern kept growing. Fans have gone nearly 5 years without meaningful gameplay, updated footage, or any serious look at how Saber plans to modernize one of the most beloved roleplaying games in Star Wars history. That has made every small update feel more significant than it normally would, and this latest comment follows a long stretch where the remake’s future felt increasingly uncertain.
At the same time, this is still a very cautious update. Willits did not share a release window, new platforms, gameplay direction, or any production detail beyond the fact that development is continuing. So while the project is clearly not dead, there is still no sign that players should expect a major reveal anytime soon. Right now, the most realistic takeaway is simple: the remake still exists, but it likely remains far enough away that Saber is not ready to say more.
For longtime fans of Knights of the Old Republic, that leaves the remake in a familiar place. It is alive, but still distant. After so many years of uncertainty, this is at least a meaningful reset for the conversation. The project is not canceled, and Saber has now said so directly. The next real milestone will be when the studio is finally ready to show what this remake actually looks like and how it intends to bring one of gaming’s most iconic RPGs into a modern era.
Do you think the KOTOR remake can still live up to the original after such a long and troubled road, or has the wait already become too long?
