Squadron 42 Opens Steam Page With Q2 2027 Release Window and Surprisingly Modest PC Requirements

Cloud Imperium Games has officially opened the Squadron 42 Steam page, giving the long awaited single player Star Citizen campaign a planned Q2 2027 release window alongside its first dedicated minimum PC requirements. Players can now wishlist the game on Steam, although an exact launch date and price have not yet been announced.

The Steam listing identifies Q2 2027 as the planned release period, placing Squadron 42 somewhere between April and June if the current schedule holds. Cloud Imperium Games is listed as the developer, while Roberts Space Industries handles publishing. The page also confirms Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, HDR support, Family Sharing, and the requirement for a Roberts Space Industries account that can be linked to Steam.

Alongside the listing, Cloud Imperium released a new Squadron 42 wishlist trailer titled The Oath, offering another look at the game's military science fiction campaign, large scale space battles, first person combat, capital ships, and cinematic character performances.

Squadron 42 places players in the role of a rookie recruit joining the United Empire of Earth Navy in 2945. Rather than providing the open ended multiplayer structure of Star Citizen, the campaign focuses on a directed narrative experience that moves between spacecraft combat, ground operations, exploration, and interactions with the crew aboard major military vessels.

The cast remains one of the project's biggest attractions, with Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Henry Cavill, Ben Mendelsohn, Andy Serkis, John Rhys Davies, Mark Strong, Jonathan Bailey, Liam Cunningham, Jane Perry, and others appearing through full performance capture.

Perhaps the biggest surprise from the Steam page is how accessible the current minimum specifications appear considering Squadron 42's visual ambitions.

Component Minimum Requirement
Operating System Windows 11 64 bit
CPU Quad Core Intel i7 Sandy Bridge or later, AMD Bulldozer or later
Memory 16 GB RAM
Graphics DirectX 11.1 compatible GPU with 8 GB VRAM
DirectX Version 12
Storage 150 GB available space
Network Broadband Internet connection

The CPU requirements are particularly modest on paper, reaching back to Intel Sandy Bridge and AMD Bulldozer architectures introduced more than a decade ago. The graphics requirement does not identify a specific GPU model, instead asking for a DirectX 11.1 compatible card equipped with at least 8 GB of VRAM.

That makes the 8 GB VRAM requirement more informative than the GPU description itself. Without a named graphics card, resolution target, graphics preset, or expected frame rate, the current listing does not indicate what experience these minimum specifications are expected to deliver.

The Steam page also requires 150 GB of available storage, although it does not currently specify an SSD. Cloud Imperium's existing game and launcher requirements recommend SSD storage for its games, making solid state storage the more realistic expectation for Squadron 42 despite the wording of the new store page.

There are also differences between the older general Cloud Imperium requirements and the dedicated Steam listing. The existing support page covers both Star Citizen and Squadron 42 and lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 alongside 4 GB of graphics memory, while the newly published Squadron 42 Steam specifications require Windows 11 and 8 GB of VRAM. With the Steam page being the newer and game specific listing, those requirements are the more relevant reference for the upcoming release.

Recommended specifications remain largely absent. Steam currently lists only the requirement for a 64 bit processor and operating system under the recommended section, without providing a recommended CPU, graphics card, RAM capacity, or performance target. Cloud Imperium therefore appears likely to update the hardware information as Squadron 42 moves closer to release.

The arrival of an official Steam page is itself a notable development. Squadron 42 previously appeared among the unreleased titles exposed through the Steam API achievement data issue, providing an early indication that Cloud Imperium was preparing a Steam presence. The public store page now formally confirms that Valve's platform will be part of the game's distribution strategy.

Squadron 42 has spent years moving through development and polishing, with Cloud Imperium previously declaring the campaign feature complete before focusing on improving gameplay, cinematics, environments, characters, and overall presentation. The new Steam listing does not guarantee that Q2 2027 cannot move again, but it provides one of the clearest public launch targets the project has received.

The minimum specifications are surprisingly restrained for a game Cloud Imperium continues to present as a technical showcase for StarEngine, but they should not be interpreted as an indication that Squadron 42 will be easy to run at high settings.

An 8 GB VRAM requirement tells us relatively little without a specific GPU, resolution, graphics preset, and frame rate target. The absence of meaningful recommended specifications makes it even harder to estimate what hardware will be required for 1440p, 4K, or higher refresh rate gameplay.

The more significant development is probably the Steam page itself. Squadron 42 now has a visible storefront, wishlists, defined platform requirements, a new trailer, and a Q2 2027 release target. For a project that has spent more than a decade in development, those are considerably more concrete signals than another development update alone.

The next information worth watching will be the final recommended specifications, pricing, and an exact launch date.

Are Squadron 42's current minimum PC requirements lower than you expected, or are you waiting for the recommended specifications before judging how demanding the game will really be?
