Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Engine Updated with Later Unreal Engine Features to Enable PlayStation 5 Pro Exclusives Like PSSR
Ninja Theory has confirmed that Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II’s engine was updated with features from newer versions of Unreal Engine 5 to enable PlayStation 5 Pro-exclusive enhancements, including PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) and variable rate shading.
In a new video released on YouTube, Technical Director Gavin Costello explained that the process of bringing the game to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro was less about porting the gameplay and more about porting the technology itself. Thanks to Epic’s strong platform integration, the studio was able to quickly get the game running from start to finish on Sony’s hardware and assess performance.
From there, the development team implemented all of the game’s features into the new PlayStation builds and upgraded the original Unreal Engine 5 version used at launch with elements from newer iterations. These upgrades were essential to enable PS5 Pro-exclusive features such as PSSR and variable rate shading. Costello noted that these technological improvements likely helped bring the new 60 FPS Performance Mode to the Xbox Series X version, which will launch at the same time as the PlayStation release.
The Enhanced update arriving tomorrow will deliver substantial improvements across all platforms. On Xbox Series X, players will get access to a 60 FPS Performance Mode. On PC, the update introduces a “Very High” preset for pushing visual fidelity even further, along with full Steam Deck verification and optimizations to ensure a smooth experience on the handheld. The patch will also add a new play mode and various gameplay enhancements.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is currently available on PC, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. The PlayStation 5 version and the Enhanced update for all platforms will launch Today
Do you think the PlayStation 5 Pro enhancements like PSSR will make Hellblade II the definitive version, or will PC still hold the crown for visuals and performance?
