Roblox to be Sued by Louisiana Attorney General for its Lack of Safety Protocols Against Sex Predators

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has announced via X that her office is filing a lawsuit against Roblox Corporation, alleging that the popular online game platform has failed to implement adequate safety protocols to protect children from sexual predators.

In her statement, Murrill accused Roblox of fostering an environment where predators thrive, directly contributing to the exploitation of minors. The lawsuit claims:

"For years, Defendant has knowingly enabled and facilitated the systemic sexual exploitation and abuse of children across the United States, including in Louisiana. Through willful disregard and deceptive practices, Defendant has permitted and perpetuated an online environment in which child predators thrive, directly contributing to the widespread victimization of minor children in Louisiana."

It further states that Roblox’s “deliberate failure to implement effective safety measures” has inflicted “severe, lasting harm upon the children of Louisiana.”

Roblox’s Growing Concerns

The lawsuit arrives at a time when Roblox is under increasing scrutiny worldwide. The platform, originally launched in 2006, has grown to become the leading hub for user-generated content, boasting 85.3 million daily active users as of February 2025. Roblox itself has claimed that half of all American children under 16 play the game at least once a month.

Yet, this popularity has come with controversy. Roblox has already been banned in several countries, including China, Jordan, North Korea, Oman, Qatar, and Turkey, due to child exploitation concerns. In response, Roblox introduced new safety measures earlier this year: children under 13 now require parental approval to use certain chat features, while those under 9 need explicit parental consent to access experiences labeled as “Moderate” in content maturity.

The Ongoing Dispute

Despite these measures, Murrill’s office argues they fall short. The lawsuit comes just days after Roblox issued another controversial policy change: the company announced it is removing “vigilantes”, community members who took it upon themselves to monitor and police in-game activities, claiming their actions were creating an unsafe environment. Critics argue that this move only further weakens community-based protections against predators.

While the lawsuit is being filed in Louisiana, the issue is undeniably global, highlighting the challenges of managing safety on a platform where children make up the majority of the user base. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for Roblox and other online platforms aimed at younger audiences.

Do you think Roblox is doing enough to protect children, or should stronger regulations and oversight be imposed by governments worldwide?
