The Witcher 3 Gets New Mod with Monster Hunter-Like Mechanics

A new fan-made expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has arrived, bringing fresh life to CD Projekt RED’s acclaimed RPG. The mod, titled Wild Monster Hunt, was created by Aeltoth and recently highlighted by DSO Gaming. This ambitious project introduces gameplay mechanics heavily inspired by Monster Hunter, along with a massive new region comparable in size to Toussaint from Blood & Wine.

In Wild Monster Hunt (WMH), players can either begin a fresh campaign dedicated to monster hunting or access the content through their regular playthroughs to earn money and rewards. The experience centers around a customizable base camp, which functions similarly to Corvo Bianco but emphasizes features that enhance monster tracking and combat. The camp can be upgraded over time, unlocking facilities and perks that support deeper gameplay progression.

Aeltoth’s new map is not just vast, it’s built to serve as a hub for repeated hunts and procedural quests. Players venture from the camp to pursue dangerous creatures, complete randomly generated monster contracts, and collect rare materials to forge better weapons and armor. The mod even includes a unique forge exclusive to the new map, allowing players to craft specialized equipment unavailable in the base game.

The mod can be accessed in two main ways. The first is to select “New Game” in The Witcher 3’s main menu and choose the Wild Monster Hunt quick-start option. However, if this method causes a crash, Aeltoth suggests using the alternate approach: traveling to the new Wild Monster Hunt area through a signpost located east of White Orchard village, beyond the bridge and past the guard tower. Entering this area automatically adjusts loot tables and progression to keep it separate from the main story. Players can also leave anytime via the camp’s fast travel signpost.

Wild Monster Hunt also features optional challenges accessible through the camp’s noticeboard. One of the most notable is the Merciless Path mode, which transforms the mod into an extraction-style experience where players lose their gear upon death. To balance the difficulty, rewards and progression rates are increased accordingly.

The release of Wild Monster Hunt comes amid a new wave of ambitious Witcher 3 mods following CD Projekt RED’s rollout of the REDKit modding tool in May 2024. The studio is also working on cross-platform mod support powered by mod.io, though this feature has been delayed to 2026. Among the standout projects from the modding community is The Last Wish Project, which seeks to fully recreate Andrzej Sapkowski’s original The Witcher novel inside the game.

With its expansive map, monster-hunting systems, and custom-built progression loop, Wild Monster Hunt stands out as one of the most creative and substantial Witcher 3 mods ever released.
