The Outlast Trials Introduces Invasion PvP Mode and Halloween Event This October

Montréal-based developer Red Barrels has announced a major new update for The Outlast Trials, set to launch on October 21, just in time for Halloween. The update introduces a brand-new Invasion PvP Mode, expanding the game’s already tense cooperative horror experience with a deadly twist of player-versus-player combat.

In the new Invasion Mode, players can enter Trials through the Sleep Room Terminals and choose to play as either a Reagent or an Imposter. Only a select number of Imposters can invade a given Trial, but while they wait, others can act as spotters — serving as the eyes and ears for their allies.

Once an Imposter enters the match, the dynamic shifts dramatically as players turn from hunted to hunter. According to Red Barrels, this mode is designed to heighten the game’s psychological tension and paranoia, forcing players to second-guess every shadow and every scream.

Key features of the Invasion Mode include:

  • Become the Hunter: Stalk unsuspecting Reagents using stealth, deception, and perfect timing before striking.

  • Surveil the Trials: Study surveillance camera feeds to plan ambushes and coordinate attacks.

  • Don a Deadly Disguise: Take on the appearance of your victims to blend in and gain their trust before betraying them.

  • Close-Quarters Combat: One wrong move means death. Every encounter becomes a test of precision and nerve in this brutal PvP mode.

Alongside Invasion Mode, the October 21 update will also introduce the Geister 2025 Time-Limited Event and Time-Limited Catalog, giving players access to exclusive themed rewards. Additionally, two new MK-ChallengesBeguile the Children and Investigate the Minotaur — will become available.

The update also brings the debut of an in-game store, allowing players to browse new customization options and event-related items directly from within the game.

The Outlast Trials, which officially launched on March 5, 2024, after a successful early access period, has been praised for its chilling atmosphere and inventive approach to co-op horror. Available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, the game has sold an estimated two to three million copies on Steam alone, showing strong ongoing community support.

With the addition of Invasion Mode and the Halloween event, The Outlast Trials continues to evolve, promising even more psychological terror and unpredictable gameplay moments for its growing player base.

Will you take on the challenge as a Reagent or an Imposter when the Invasion update goes live?
