Project Retrograde: The Becoming Is a New Resident Evil-Inspired Survival Action Game

Chinese developer Invercity Game Works has announced a new title, Project Retrograde: The Becoming, with its first reveal trailer published via IGN’s YouTube channel. The game immediately drew attention for its striking resemblance to CAPCOM’s iconic Resident Evil franchise, blending survival-horror tension with action-driven gameplay.

According to the official website, the story takes players back to 1995, when Project Retrograde—humanity’s last hope—collapsed after the underground world was devastated by the ancient parasite L.U.C.A.. Players take on the role of a bounty hunter who becomes symbiotic with the parasite, gaining extraordinary powers at the cost of being consumed by it.

Infected by L.U.C.A., the protagonist develops the ability to absorb combat memories from fallen hosts. This mechanic allows players to unlock a variety of fighting styles and parasitic skills, ranging from martial arts mastery to becoming a merciless assassin reminiscent of the “Baba Yaga.”

The trailer highlights a mix of third-person combat, atmospheric exploration, and survival mechanics, all wrapped in a presentation that pays homage to retro-inspired horror design. Players will explore a post-apocalyptic underground realm infused with retro technology, altering the environment through the LUX system—a feature that lets players manipulate underground weather to gain tactical advantages.

The game also promises vertical exploration, as players will be able to climb towers to discover hidden regions and uncover long-buried secrets about the parasite and the fall of humanity.

Project Retrograde: The Becoming is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X. Invercity has not yet confirmed a release date or release window, leaving fans eager for more updates.

With its blend of parasitic powers, survival-horror roots, and kung fu-infused combat, Project Retrograde: The Becoming could carve its own identity in a genre dominated by Resident Evil and its successors—if it balances inspiration with innovation.

What do you think of this reveal trailer—does Project Retrograde: The Becoming look like a fresh twist on survival horror, or too close to its Resident Evil inspiration?
