Phantom Blade Zero Gets 5 GB Patch as Developer Warns Against Latest NVIDIA Drivers

Phantom Blade Zero has received a substantial 5 GB launch update designed to improve ray tracing and path tracing performance while addressing several technical issues. In an official Steam announcement, creative director and producer Soulframe Liang confirmed that the update was completed ahead of release, delivering significant graphical optimizations and bug fixes. Players who preloaded the game must install the additional patch before launching, while new downloads automatically include the latest version. The studio also emphasized that considerable development effort went into optimizing traditional rasterized graphics, allowing players to experience the game's visual design without enabling demanding ray tracing effects.

However, the more concerning development involves NVIDIA graphics drivers. According to Liang, internal testing identified performance instability with NVIDIA Game Ready Driver 621.01, prompting the studio to recommend the older 617.42 release for the best compatibility. Players experiencing problems with newer drivers are advised to perform a clean installation of version 617.42 until a compatible update becomes available. This recommendation directly contrasts with NVIDIA's official launch announcement, which promoted driver 621.01 for Phantom Blade Zero alongside support for DLSS 4.5, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction. NVIDIA has since released hotfix driver 621.12, although its published fixes do not explicitly confirm a resolution for the game's reported instability.

The situation is particularly relevant for players using RTX graphics cards, as path tracing significantly increases GPU workloads and can make maintaining consistent frame rates more challenging. While the developer expects the launch patch to deliver considerable improvements, specific performance gains have not been quantified through official benchmarks. The studio has also tested the game on midrange systems, entry level PCs, and handheld gaming devices, suggesting that players without flagship hardware should still have viable graphical options.

Launch patches are increasingly important for demanding Unreal Engine 5 titles, particularly those implementing advanced lighting technologies. What makes this situation unusual is the developer recommending an older NVIDIA driver despite a newer Game Ready release specifically targeting the game. For PC gamers, stable frame pacing and driver compatibility should take priority over enabling every graphical feature, especially when path tracing already places considerable demands on GPU performance.

Have you experienced performance issues with Phantom Blade Zero, and would you downgrade your NVIDIA drivers for better stability or wait for an official fix?
