OpenAI and NVIDIA Announce Strategic Partnership to Deploy 10 Gigawatts of AI Infrastructure
NVIDIA and OpenAI have announced a landmark strategic partnership to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of NVIDIA systems for OpenAI’s next-generation AI infrastructure, marking one of the largest AI compute buildouts in history. The new systems will support the training and deployment of OpenAI’s next wave of models on the path toward superintelligence.
As part of the agreement, NVIDIA intends to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI over time, aligned with the rollout of this infrastructure. The first phase of the project is expected to come online in the second half of 2026, built on NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform.
“NVIDIA and OpenAI have pushed each other for a decade, from the first DGX supercomputer to the breakthrough of ChatGPT,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “This investment and infrastructure partnership mark the next leap forward, deploying 10 gigawatts to power the next era of intelligence.”
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman echoed the importance of compute:
“Everything starts with compute. Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilize what we’re building with NVIDIA to both create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale.”
Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s co-founder and President, emphasized the long-standing collaboration:
“We’ve been working closely with NVIDIA since the early days of OpenAI. We’ve utilized their platform to create AI systems that hundreds of millions of people use every day. We’re excited to deploy 10 gigawatts of compute with NVIDIA to push back the frontier of intelligence and scale the benefits of this technology to everyone.”
The partnership designates NVIDIA as OpenAI’s preferred strategic compute and networking partner for its AI factory growth plans. Both companies will co-optimize their roadmaps, aligning OpenAI’s model and infrastructure software with NVIDIA’s hardware and software innovations.
This move complements OpenAI and NVIDIA’s ongoing collaborations with Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and Stargate partners, all focused on building the most advanced AI infrastructure globally.
Scale of Adoption
OpenAI now has more than 700 million weekly active users, with strong adoption across global enterprises, small businesses, and developers. This new infrastructure aims to accelerate OpenAI’s mission to deliver artificial general intelligence (AGI) that benefits all of humanity.
NVIDIA and OpenAI are expected to finalize the details of this partnership in the coming weeks, but the announcement already signals one of the boldest investments in AI infrastructure to date.
Do you think this partnership between NVIDIA and OpenAI is the key step toward realizing superintelligence, or does it raise new questions about centralizing so much AI compute power in one alliance?
