NVIDIA’s Smooth Motion Feature Unofficially Enabled on GeForce RTX 40 Series, PUBG Sees Up to 60% FPS Boost

NVIDIA’s Smooth Motion technology, previously limited to the newer GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs, can now be activated on RTX 40 series cards through the unofficial use of Preview Driver 590.26. While not yet officially supported by NVIDIA for the RTX 40 series, early adopters are already reporting substantial performance gains—especially in PUBG, where frame rates have increased by as much as 60%.

Smooth Motion is a driver-level frame generation enhancement that functions similarly to AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames (FMF). Unlike DLSS Frame Generation, it doesn't require per-game developer integration, making it a compelling universal option for performance boosts. Though it doesn’t rival DLSS 3 in terms of image reconstruction quality, Smooth Motion is still proving to be a valuable feature for users aiming to improve fluidity and responsiveness in demanding titles.

To access Smooth Motion on RTX 40 GPUs, users must install the 590.26 Preview Driver unofficially hosted on GitHub, as official NVIDIA developer access is required for standard channels. After installation, users should configure their settings using the NVIDIA Profile Inspector tool to activate Smooth Motion for specific games.

One of the more prominent benchmarks comes from the First Ever YouTube channel, which shared a side-by-side comparison of PUBG running on a GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. In the test, frame rates jumped from double-digit to consistent triple-digit levels, demonstrating up to a 60% FPS boost. Although there was a slight increase in render latency, the overall experience remained significantly smoother.

Additional users have reported similar gains in other titles such as Deep Rock Galactic Survivor. However, results are mixed across the board due to the experimental nature of the driver. Some gamers have encountered bugs or were unable to activate the feature altogether. One workaround for this issue involves updating RTSS to version 7.3.7 Beta 6 if using MSI Afterburner, as detailed in a Reddit thread explaining the installation steps.

As this remains an unofficial and unstable release, users should proceed with caution. Nonetheless, the results so far are promising and indicate that full Smooth Motion support on RTX 40 series cards could become a major driver-level enhancement once officially rolled out by NVIDIA.
