No Man’s Sky THE SWARM Update Introduces the Hive of Glass as a Universe Ending Threat
Hello Games has released THE SWARM, a major new update for No Man’s Sky that introduces one of the most dangerous threats the universe has ever faced. Following the previous XENO ARENA update, which brought Pokémon style pet battles to the long running space exploration game, THE SWARM takes a much larger and more dramatic direction by turning the entire player base into part of a universe wide war effort.
At the center of the update is the Hive of Glass, a mysterious and ominous new enemy described by Hello Games as an existential threat to the entire universe. This is not just another enemy faction or isolated mission chain. THE SWARM is built around a shared community conflict where every player is pushed into a larger galactic struggle.
When players launch No Man’s Sky after installing the update, they will be required to complete a personality test that assigns them to 1 of 3 factions. These factions must cooperate, strategize, and compete as they work to uncover the secrets behind the Hive of Glass. The update is designed around a combined community effort, with players investigating the Hive’s origins, discovering its weaknesses, and sharing that knowledge with others across the game.
The war effort begins from the Nexus, the social and mission hub located inside the Space Anomaly. Defenses are being rapidly constructed, and a new bulletin page tracks the progress of the conflict. Player contributions against the Hive are being logged publicly inside the Anomaly and through the Galactic Atlas, giving the community a clear look at how the fight is progressing.
Faction performance will also matter beyond simple bragging rights. Hello Games says players should keep an eye on which faction contributes the most to the war effort, because the most effective faction will later be memorialized inside the Space Anomaly. This gives the update a competitive edge while still keeping the focus on shared survival.
THE SWARM also brings what Hello Games describes as the biggest and most epic space battles ever seen in No Man’s Sky. The Hive of Glass defends itself by releasing swarms of robotic drones, creating massive space battles with hundreds of ships. These encounters are designed to make the sky feel more chaotic, cinematic, and dangerous than before, pushing the game’s space combat into a much larger scale.
The Hive itself is also a weapon. According to Hello Games, its iris can open to unleash the largest weapon seen in No Man’s Sky to date, a devastating laser capable of destroying freighter fleets and potentially even space stations. That scale immediately raises the stakes for players, turning the Hive of Glass into more than a visual centerpiece. It is a galactic level danger with the potential to reshape how players experience the universe.
While the main focus of THE SWARM is on large space battles, the update also expands planetary activities. Players will investigate and pillage the remains of crashed drones, using the Gravity Gun introduced earlier this year to interact with wreckage and recover important materials. Shot down drones need to be salvaged and researched, while smaller planetary swarms must be defeated as part of the wider war effort.
Research also plays a key role in the update. Players will need to study drone remains, understand the Hive’s network, and find ways to sabotage its systems. This gives THE SWARM more structure than a simple combat update, blending large scale space warfare with exploration, investigation, and community progression.
Beyond the galactic war, THE SWARM also adds a new wave of rewards. Players can unlock a full armor set with a retro sci fi style, a new rifle, a massive new jetpack, and additional items connected to the update. These rewards give players more reasons to join the fight, especially those who enjoy customizing their Traveller with gear that reflects major milestones in No Man’s Sky’s evolving universe.
THE SWARM continues No Man’s Sky’s long running transformation from survival exploration game into one of the most community driven live service experiences in the industry. Hello Games has repeatedly expanded the game with new systems, new threats, new mechanics, and new ways for players to interact with the universe. This latest update feels especially ambitious because it asks the entire player base to work together against a shared enemy that could threaten everything.
With the Hive of Glass now active, No Man’s Sky players are no longer just exploring the universe. They are defending it.
Which faction will you join in No Man’s Sky THE SWARM, and do you think the community can stop the Hive of Glass before it destroys the universe?
