Nexus Mods Has Been Sold to a New Owner, the Largest PC Modding Platform

In a significant change for one of PC gaming's most vital platforms, Nexus Mods the largest and most enduring repository for game mods—has officially been sold to an undisclosed buyer. The announcement was made by Robin “Dark0ne” Scott, the founder and longtime administrator of the site, through a heartfelt official blog post.

The Nexus Mods platform, has served the modding community for over two decades, supporting millions of users and hosting mods for games ranging from The Elder Scrolls and Fallout to Cyberpunk 2077 and Stardew Valley. In 2023, it surpassed the milestone of 10 billion downloads, cementing its role as a cornerstone of PC gaming culture.

A Personal Decision After 24 Years of Leadership

Dark0ne cited long-term stress, anxiety, and burnout as the primary reasons behind the decision to sell the site after 24 years of relentless commitment to the platform.

“The strain of being responsible for the behemoth I created has taken its toll. The stress of the job has been a regular source of anxiety and stress-related health issues. I realised that I have been burning out and this started to have an impact on my staff and Nexus Mods as a whole,” he wrote in his farewell blog.

While the identity of the new owner remains undisclosed, Dark0ne assured the community that the new team understands both the business mechanics of Nexus Mods and the cultural intricacies of the modding ecosystem.

“After months of meetings, face-to-face talks, and a whole lot of soul searching, I am thrilled to say that I truly believe I have found the exact right people for the task.”

Importantly, this is not a corporate acquisition in the traditional sense, nor a shadowy buyout. As Dark0ne emphasized, this is about prioritizing personal well-being after years of relentless pressure.

What Changes for Users and Modders?

According to the post, nothing major will change for end users and mod authors in the immediate future. The platform will remain the same for downloading, uploading, and managing game mods.

“This isn’t some corporate ‘exit’ or a backroom deal… On the player and modder side of things, there won't really be any changes. The biggest change is simply the ownership.”

Dark0ne also stated he would remain involved in an advisory capacity for a while, to help with the transition and ensure the legacy of Nexus Mods continues under the new leadership.

A Legacy Worth Preserving

Under Robin Scott’s stewardship, Nexus Mods grew from a small fansite into the backbone of modern PC modding. The platform provided a safe, centralized, and community-driven space for modders to publish their work and for gamers to explore new and innovative ways to enhance their favorite titles.

This handover marks the end of an era, but it also opens the door to a potential new chapter in modding history—one that, hopefully, will continue to honor the principles of openness, creativity, and community that made Nexus Mods a household name in the PC gaming world.
