Next BioShock Is Now on a Great Track to Take the Franchise to the Next Level, Says Take-Two CEO
After more than twelve years since the release of BioShock Infinite, the long wait for a new entry in the franchise may finally be moving in the right direction. During Take-Two Interactive’s Q2 2026 earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that development on the next BioShock is “on a great track” and poised to take the franchise “to the next level.”
The upcoming installment is currently in development at Cloud Chamber, a studio established in 2019 under Take-Two’s publishing label 2K Games. Headquartered in Novato, California, Cloud Chamber was formed to continue the legacy of the acclaimed first-person series originally created by Ken Levine and Irrational Games.
Since its formation, the studio has faced several challenges, including a complete reboot of the project in 2023 and a significant round of layoffs in August 2025 that reportedly affected around 80 employees. Those setbacks led to the game’s internal release window shifting to late 2027, according to credible industry reports. Despite those obstacles, Take-Two appears confident in the current trajectory of the project.
One of the most significant changes was the appointment of Rod Fergusson as the new head of Cloud Chamber. Fergusson, a well-known industry veteran, previously held key roles at Epic Games, The Coalition, and Blizzard Entertainment, where he contributed to the success of major franchises such as Gears of War and Diablo. He also has prior experience with the BioShock series, having worked on BioShock Infinite.
Speaking during the earnings call, Zelnick praised Fergusson’s leadership and experience, describing his arrival as pivotal to the project’s progress.
“We’re very excited that we brought Rod on to lead Cloud Chamber. He’s obviously an incredible industry veteran with history on BioShock Infinite, Gears of War, and Diablo. BioShock is one of our most important franchises, and we’re very excited about the release of the next installment. We’ve made organizational changes and adjustments, and we feel that the game is now on a great track to deliver something that exceeds consumers’ expectations.”
Zelnick emphasized that Take-Two’s ambition is not simply to revive the franchise but to push it forward technologically and creatively.
“The next BioShock is going to take the franchise to the next level, which is always our ambition with all of our properties.”
While a release is still several years away, fans of immersive, narrative-driven shooters can look forward to related projects in the meantime. Ken Levine’s new studio, Ghost Story Games, is currently working on Judas, a spiritual successor to BioShock that shares thematic DNA but introduces new mechanics and storytelling dynamics. Zelnick mentioned that Judas is “coming up,” suggesting it may arrive before the next BioShock.
Additionally, Netflix’s live-action BioShock film adaptation, directed by The Hunger Games filmmaker Francis Lawrence, is set to begin production once Lawrence completes his next project, Sunrise on the Reaping.
The next BioShock remains one of the most anticipated titles in modern gaming. With Fergusson now leading Cloud Chamber and Take-Two reaffirming its confidence, the project appears to be regaining stability after years of turbulence.
