New Tomb Raider Game Announcement Confirmed for The Game Awards 2025
One of gaming’s most iconic franchises is officially set to return to the spotlight. Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that the next Tomb Raider game will be revealed during The Game Awards 2025, airing Thursday, December 11, at 7:30 PM Eastern Time, 4:30 PM Pacific Time, and 12:30 AM British Time. The announcement comes directly from Geoff Keighley and the franchise’s official account, which shared the reveal message through X, teasing Lara Croft’s long awaited comeback: “Did you miss her? She missed you… tune in to @thegameawards on December 11 for a look at the future of one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.”
The reveal marks a major milestone for fans who have waited more than seven years for a new mainline Tomb Raider title. Lara Croft, recently recognized by Guinness World Records as the best selling videogame heroine of all time, has been absent since the 2018 release of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Crystal Dynamics served only as a support studio on that installment while focusing on Marvel’s Avengers, a project that ultimately failed to meet commercial expectations despite its high profile IP.
In April 2022, Crystal Dynamics confirmed early development of a new Tomb Raider title and announced the transition from its proprietary Foundation Engine to Unreal Engine 5. Since then, Amazon Games has stepped in as publisher, with Amazon also acquiring the film and television rights to build what appears to be a cross media Tomb Raider universe. Reports have suggested Amazon intends to integrate the new game, future films, and a television series into a unified narrative ecosystem.
Although official details remain tightly under wraps, one of the only credible early rumors surfaced in May 2024, suggesting the new title may be set in India with an open world environment that allows Lara to traverse large maps using a motorcycle. Whether this rumor holds true may become clearer during the upcoming TGA reveal.
Meanwhile, Amazon’s TV adaptation continues to gain momentum. Sophie Turner has been cast as Lara Croft, with filming expected to begin next year and a potential release window in 2027. While excitement builds for the show, gamers are hopeful that Crystal Dynamics’ next Tomb Raider installment will arrive much sooner, ideally in 2026, marking Lara’s long overdue return to interactive adventuring.
With the official announcement now locked in for The Game Awards, anticipation is reaching a fever pitch as fans prepare to witness the next chapter of a franchise that helped define modern action adventure gaming.
