Mortal Shell 2 Gameplay Reveal Shows a Bigger World, Smoother Combat, and Three New Shells Ahead of Its 2026 Launch
Cold Symmetry and Playstack have finally shared the first real gameplay look at Mortal Shell 2, giving players a much clearer idea of how the sequel is expanding on the original game’s dark action RPG foundation. First revealed during Summer Game Fest 2025, Mortal Shell 2 remains scheduled for release in 2026, with its official Steam listing and publisher materials still pointing to that launch window.
The new gameplay trailer, available through the official YouTube reveal, immediately makes one thing clear: Mortal Shell 2 is aiming for a much larger scale than the first game. Playstack’s official description says the sequel expands the original’s fast and demanding combat while adding deeper weapon design, more upgrade options, and a stronger emphasis on free exploration across a compact open world. The Steam page also describes a world connected by many paths and more than 60 dungeons, suggesting a much broader and more layered structure than what players saw in Mortal Shell in 2020.
That scale is only part of the upgrade. The combat shown in the trailer looks notably smoother and more fluid, with cleaner transitions between attacks, evasive movement, and Shell swapping. One of the biggest official changes is that Mortal Shell 2 no longer uses stamina in the same way as its predecessor. According to Playstack’s own description, the sequel’s combat is “agile yet grounded” and “unrestricted by stamina,” with players expected to break enemy posture and capitalize with critical strikes. That change alone could have a major impact on how the sequel feels in hand, especially for players who found the first game more methodical and rigid than some of its genre peers.
The trailer also puts a spotlight on three new Shells, once again reinforcing the mechanic that made Mortal Shell stand out in the first place. Possessing different warrior bodies remains the heart of the game’s identity, and the sequel appears to be pushing that concept much harder with more dramatic combat styles and broader weapon variety. The official Steam description says players will possess powerful warriors, awaken their abilities, and shape their own fighting style through each Shell’s unique skills and lost memories. That structure looks intact, but the sequel’s presentation suggests it is being delivered with a much more confident sense of scale and spectacle.
One of the more striking elements in the gameplay is the inclusion of ranged options that feel much more aggressive than what many players may expect from the setting. The Steam age gate description explicitly mentions medieval firearms among the game’s violent content, which lines up with the more explosive and visually varied combat shown in the trailer. That could become one of the sequel’s most important differentiators if Cold Symmetry manages to balance those ranged tools without losing the oppressive tone and deliberate impact that defined the first game.
At this stage, there is still no confirmed release date beyond 2026, and neither Cold Symmetry nor Playstack has locked in a more specific launch window publicly. Even so, the arrival of a full gameplay reveal suggests the project is entering a more active marketing phase. With Summer Game Fest 2026 approaching in just a couple of months, Mortal Shell 2 now feels like a strong candidate for another major beat soon, whether that means a release date, a deeper gameplay breakdown, or hands on coverage. That part remains expectation rather than confirmation, but the timing certainly makes sense.
For now, the important takeaway is that Mortal Shell 2 does not look like a simple follow up built on the first game’s formula with slightly better visuals. It looks like a more ambitious project in scope, structure, and combat expression, while still keeping the Shell system at the center of its identity. If Cold Symmetry can translate the smoother trailer presentation into a strong hands on experience, Mortal Shell 2 could end up being one of the more notable Soulslike releases of 2026.
What do you think, does Mortal Shell 2 look ready to step into the top tier of modern Soulslikes, or do you still need to see a full hands on demo before getting excited?
