Monster Fantasy Blends Monster Hunting, Cozy Village Life, and AI NPC Conversations

Independent developer Jotoyo has announced Monster Fantasy, an ambitious action RPG that combines large scale monster hunting, creature taming, village building, life simulation, and dynamic AI powered conversations. The debut project from the Chengdu based studio is currently being developed for PC through Steam, with a Kickstarter campaign scheduled to begin on July 15, 2026.

Jotoyo is composed of around 20 developers with decades of combined industry experience. The studio is positioning Monster Fantasy as a bridge between action focused players and audiences who prefer slower life simulation experiences, drawing visible inspiration from Monster Hunter, Pokémon, Stardew Valley, and Animal Crossing while presenting the world through a colorful chibi visual style.

Players enter the Kingdom of Eldoras as an amnesiac hero exploring valleys, rainforests, frozen plains, volcanoes, and villages. Jotoyo says combat and life simulation will operate as independent progression paths, allowing players to focus on monster hunting, village life, or a combination of both without being forced into one specific style.

The combat system includes 4 character classes with different mechanical identities. The Warrior focuses on heavy equipment, defensive timing, and precise guarding, while the Mage combines elements to create custom spells. The Archer specializes in ranged attacks, while the fourth class is currently identified as Martial Artist on Steam and as Swordsman in some early press materials, suggesting its final name may still change during development.

Skills are connected to individual weapons rather than permanently restricted to one class. This allows a single character to unlock skills from every combat style, giving players the option to specialize in one discipline or gradually master the complete selection.

Monster behavior will also change depending on the time of day and weather conditions. Players will need to observe creatures and understand their habits before entering combat, while selected villagers can be recruited as companions. Around 50 giant monsters are planned, including creatures such as the Nine Tailed Fox, Fire Dragon, Griffin, and Squirrel Bear.

Defeated monsters can be tamed and raised as pets. These creatures begin in younger forms, develop new abilities as they grow, and can eventually become rideable mounts. Players will be able to travel across Eldoras on their monsters and fight beside them during solo or cooperative adventures.

Outside combat, Monster Fantasy includes fishing, mining, wood gathering, farming, cooking, potion brewing, equipment crafting, home construction, decoration, and village management. Players can name their settlement, construct homes, recruit workers, and choose which residents they want to invite into the community.

Around 100 villagers are expected to appear across Eldoras, each with individual personalities, interests, and practical strengths. Villagers can become friends, join the settlement, perform different jobs, or participate in combat when their abilities are suitable.

One of the most technically ambitious features is the AI conversation system. Jotoyo says players will be able to communicate freely with characters during recruitment, bargaining, and general conversations. Steam's AI Generated Content Disclosure confirms that in game chat will be generated dynamically through large language model and text to speech technology, allowing characters to respond based on player choices and behavior.

Important technical questions remain unanswered. Jotoyo has not yet explained which language model will power the system, whether conversations will require a permanent internet connection, how player data will be processed, what moderation tools will be used, or whether traditional written dialogue will remain available if the AI service becomes unavailable. These details will be important as the project moves closer to release.

Monster Fantasy currently has no confirmed launch date. PC is the only announced platform, while the July 15 Kickstarter campaign is expected to provide additional information about funding goals, development milestones, potential demonstrations, and the wider production roadmap. Monster Fantasy has a compelling concept because it combines several popular genres without treating one side as a secondary activity. Players who want demanding monster battles can pursue that path, while those interested in farming, decorating, relationships, and village management can progress through a calmer experience.

The largest concern is scope. Monster hunting, cooperative multiplayer, creature evolution, multiple classes, village construction, around 100 villagers, and real time AI conversations would be a substantial production challenge for any studio, especially a team of around 20 developers. The Kickstarter campaign will need to demonstrate that Jotoyo has a realistic roadmap and enough technical infrastructure to support these systems after launch.

The AI dialogue system could become Monster Fantasy's most distinctive feature, but it could also become its greatest risk. Dynamic conversations must remain consistent with character personalities, story events, progression, and world rules. Weak responses, long delays, repetitive dialogue, or inconsistent character memories could quickly undermine the social simulation.

If Jotoyo can control the project scope and make the combat and life systems equally satisfying, Monster Fantasy could find a strong audience among players looking for something between Monster Hunter and Animal Crossing. For now, it is an ambitious independent game with a promising identity and several major technical questions still waiting to be answered.

Would AI powered villager conversations make Monster Fantasy feel more alive, or would you prefer every character interaction to remain fully written by human developers?
