Marathon’s Cryo Archive Endgame Raid Is Almost Here, and Players Will Need 2 Key Requirements to Access It

Bungie’s first true endgame destination in Marathon, Cryo Archive, appears to be getting very close, and while the studio has not yet published a full official unlock checklist of its own, the community has now largely converged on what players will need in order to enter when the zone finally opens. Based on the current player findings, the access requirements are reaching Season Level 25 and establishing a connection with all 6 factions. Reporting from multiple outlets and community trackers now points to the same 2 conditions, even if Bungie has not yet posted a standalone official breakdown in a dedicated news post.

What is officially confirmed is that Cryo Archive is the fourth zone in Marathon, that it is positioned as an endgame challenge, and that it becomes available only after the community unlocks the route into orbit. Bungie has also described it as taking place aboard the derelict UESC Marathon ship, where players will solve security puzzles, open frozen vaults, and face a threat the UESC itself fears. In the studio’s own seasonal overview, Bungie clearly frames Cryo Archive as one of Season 1’s major late game pillars.

The faction requirement sounds more intimidating than it actually is. Players do not appear to need every faction upgrade tree completed. Instead, the current understanding is that they only need to establish an initial relationship with each faction by clearing the first “Introducing” style contract for all 6 groups. Bungie has already confirmed that liaison contract progression carries over between seasons, which is an important detail because it means once players unlock those faction connections, they should not need to repeat that part every seasonal reset.

The second condition is far more straightforward. Players need to hit Season Level 25, which fits Bungie’s existing progression structure for zone access. Bungie previously confirmed that Outpost, the game’s third zone, unlocks at Runner Level 12, so Cryo Archive requiring a deeper level investment is a logical escalation for what the studio is positioning as Marathon’s first real endgame activity.

That also aligns with the larger progression fantasy Bungie laid out for Season 1. In its official roadmap language, the studio describes the seasonal climb as a journey from your first runs on Perimeter all the way to the endgame on Cryo Archive and Ranked mode. In other words, Cryo Archive is not just another map drop. It is being treated as a major skill and progression checkpoint for Marathon’s first season.

There is another reason this zone matters. Cryo Archive is not simply important for loot or challenge level. It also looks like it will be one of the most significant story spaces in Marathon so far. Bungie has repeatedly tied the zone to the mystery of the derelict colony ship and the larger narrative around the lost souls of Tau Ceti IV. That makes it a gameplay escalation and a lore escalation at the same time, which is exactly the kind of structure Bungie tends to reserve for content it wants players to treat as a centerpiece rather than a side destination.

For players trying to get ready now, the practical takeaway is simple. If you want to be prepared the moment Cryo Archive opens, make sure you have completed the introductory connection contract for every faction and pushed your account to Season Level 25. Since the community unlock process is already nearing completion, anyone still behind on those goals should probably treat this as the final prep window rather than something to worry about later. The community discussion around the requirements is also reflected in recent creator coverage, including Onepeg post, while Bungie’s own Marathon video continues to build anticipation around the game’s evolving endgame direction.

If Bungie follows through, Cryo Archive could become the first real proof point for whether Marathon can deliver a compelling long term endgame loop, not just a strong launch framework. And for an extraction shooter trying to establish staying power, that may matter more than any single map release.

What do you think, will Cryo Archive be the moment Marathon truly finds its endgame identity, or is Bungie still under pressure to prove the game can support long term raid style play?
