Disney Reportedly Eyes Epic Games Acquisition as Fortnite Partnership Deepens

Rumours about Disney making a larger move into gaming are surfacing again, this time with Epic Games at the center of the discussion. According to reporting highlighted by VGC, The Verge editor Alex Heath said on The Town with Matt Belloni that some senior Disney executives want the company to eventually buy Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, and are waiting for the right opportunity. Heath also noted that there are others inside Disney who believe such a move would be a bad idea, making it clear that this is internal interest and not a confirmed acquisition plan.

The timing of the rumour is especially notable because Disney and Epic are already closely aligned. Disney officially announced in February 2024 that it would invest 1.5 billion dollars in Epic Games as part of a multiyear plan to create a new games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite. That existing strategic relationship gives the rumour more weight than a typical acquisition whisper, because Disney is not starting from zero. The companies already have a financial and creative partnership in place, and Fortnite has become one of the most visible gateways for branded entertainment crossovers in the entire games business.

The report also lands during a leadership transition at Disney. Josh D’Amaro officially became Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company on March 18, 2026, succeeding Bob Iger. That matters because the podcast discussion suggested D’Amaro is strongly supportive of Disney’s relationship with Epic, which could make Epic an even more attractive long term strategic target if Disney decides it wants a larger foothold in interactive entertainment. Still, support for the partnership is not the same thing as support for a full acquisition, and no official move has been announced by either company.

From a business standpoint, Epic would be a natural fit for Disney in several ways. Fortnite already functions as more than a game. It is a social platform, a live event space, a crossover machine for entertainment brands, and a powerful distribution environment for digital experiences. Epic also brings Unreal Engine, one of the most important technology platforms in gaming and virtual production. For Disney, owning that kind of ecosystem would offer strategic value far beyond a single title. It would strengthen the company’s position across games, digital worlds, licensing, and potentially even theme park integration. That is a major reason why the idea keeps resurfacing.

At the same time, there is a major obstacle that cannot be ignored. Epic Games remains a private company, and Tim Sweeney still holds control over its direction. Any deal of this scale would ultimately require Sweeney to agree that Epic’s future is better inside Disney than as an independent business. That is far from a small assumption. Epic has spent years building itself as a company with significant strategic independence, and there is no indication from official sources that Sweeney is looking to sell. So while Disney may have internal voices waiting for the right moment, the right moment does not exist unless Epic is willing to entertain it.

This is why the story should be treated as a serious rumour, not a developing deal. There is a clear strategic logic behind the speculation, there is an existing 1.5 billion dollar Disney investment, and there is now a CEO in place who is closely tied to Disney’s experiences and gaming adjacent ambitions. But there is still no formal bid, no public negotiation, and no sign that Epic is preparing to give up independence. For now, the report mainly shows that Epic has become important enough to sit inside Disney’s long term strategic conversation.

If anything, this rumour says just as much about where the industry is heading as it does about Disney itself. Gaming is no longer being treated as a side category by major entertainment companies. Fortnite, in particular, has become the kind of platform that media giants may view as infrastructure rather than simply software. If Disney ever decides the moment is right, the move would not just be about buying a game studio. It would be about buying a digital entertainment ecosystem.
