Godfall Developer Counterplay Games Reveals New Action Title Armatus During Xbox Partner Preview

Counterplay Games, the studio best known for Godfall, the very first title ever confirmed for the current generation of consoles before the arrival of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X S, has officially unveiled its new project. The reveal opened today’s Xbox Partner Preview showcase, marking a significant milestone for the studio as it steps into a new creative direction with its next game, Armatus.

Through an announcement on Xbox Wire, Counterplay senior writer Matt Cerami described Armatus as the culmination of perseverance and studio wide passion. He stated that the project represents their heart, energy, and camaraderie, forged through numerous challenges as the team worked to bring the game to its current state. The trailer shown during the event provides the first look at the atmospheric and stylistic identity the studio aims to establish.

Set in a distorted version of Paris, Armatus introduces a dark and surreal world where multiple planes of existence collide and reshape reality. The player is summoned by the four remaining members of the ancient religious order known as the Armatus. These figures claim to have been abandoned by God and now seek a champion who can carry their will forward as they fight their way toward salvation. Players are tasked with taking on this role and engaging in battles that blend supernatural threats with philosophical undertones.

The setting, narrative concept, and visual presentation together suggest that Counterplay is aiming to deliver a more introspective and emotionally driven experience compared to the flashy high fantasy aesthetic of Godfall. The true test will be whether the studio can refine the combat systems and storytelling elements that players felt were lacking in its previous title. Early footage shows an emphasis on cinematic presentation and fast paced action, raising expectations for a stronger and more polished gameplay identity.

The title is currently in development and is planned for release sometime in 2026. More details on gameplay, narrative depth, and platform performance are expected to be shared as the launch window approaches.
