Hogwarts Legacy Surpasses 40 Million Units Sold Worldwide, Confirms Warner Bros. Games

Warner Bros. Games has officially confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy has now sold more than 40 million units worldwide, cementing its position as one of the most successful video games of the current console generation. The milestone was announced through an official statement on the Hogwarts Legacy X account and spans all supported platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and X, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.

It remains unclear whether this figure includes recent free redemptions made available through Epic Games Store promotions. Even without factoring those in, the achievement represents an extraordinary commercial run for Avalanche Software’s open world action adventure set in the Wizarding World.

Hogwarts Legacy launched in February 2023 and was met with strong critical reception and enthusiastic fan response. This success came despite a very vocal call to boycott the game driven by “WOKE culture” discourse, centered on comments made by Harry Potter creator J K Rowling regarding transgender issues. Warner Bros. Games consistently clarified that Rowling had no direct involvement with the development of the game itself, a distinction that ultimately did little to slow its momentum in the market or affect consumer demand at scale.

The title’s sales trajectory has been remarkable almost from day one. Within just weeks of launch, Warner Bros. Games confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy had become the best selling launch in the publisher’s history. By May 2023, sales had already exceeded 15 million units, generating more than 1 billion dollars in retail revenue. Momentum continued into the following year, with Warner Bros. announcing in January 2024 that the game had surpassed 22 million units and secured the title of best selling game of 2023 in a year crowded with major triple A releases.

Later that same month, sales climbed to 24 million units, alongside announcements that previously PlayStation exclusive content would be made available on other platforms. By November 2024, Hogwarts Legacy crossed the 30 million unit mark, at which point Warner Bros. publicly confirmed that a sequel had become the company’s top development priority.

Earlier in 2024, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier reported that a Definitive Edition of Hogwarts Legacy had been in development with support from Rocksteady Studios, known for the Batman Arkham series and Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League. That version was expected to add between 10 and 15 hours of new content. However, Warner Bros. ultimately canceled the project after determining that the planned additions would not justify the estimated 30 dollar price point.

Despite that cancellation, Hogwarts Legacy 2 is firmly in development. Current rumors suggest that the sequel will avoid a live service structure, even though Warner Bros. executives have previously expressed interest in expanding successful franchises into ongoing service based models. Industry expectations now point toward any live service ambitions being pursued through a separate project rather than the mainline sequel.

The continued success of Hogwarts Legacy stands in sharp contrast to broader turbulence within Warner Bros. Games. Despite the title’s record breaking performance, the company has shuttered several studios, including Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and its San Diego based team, while restructuring operations around four core franchises: Mortal Kombat, DC, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones.

Looking ahead, the future direction of Warner Bros. Games may ultimately depend on the outcome of an ongoing acquisition battle involving Netflix and Paramount Skydance. Reports suggest that Netflix views Warner Bros. Games as a supplementary asset rather than a central pillar of the potential megadeal, adding another layer of uncertainty to the publisher’s long term strategy.

Even so, the achievement of 40 million units sold places Hogwarts Legacy among the most commercially successful single player games of the modern era, and it sets an exceptionally high bar for its upcoming sequel.

Do you think the backlash driven by WOKE culture ultimately had any real impact on Hogwarts Legacy’s success, or did it instead amplify interest in the game? Share your thoughts below.
