Hideo Kojima’s Xbox Horror Game OD Remains in Development Despite Microsoft’s Wave of Cancellations

Microsoft’s recent restructuring, which included the layoff of over 9,000 employees across the company and the cancellation of multiple high-profile projects, has spared one of its most mysterious titles — Hideo Kojima’s Xbox-exclusive horror game, OD.

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that OD is “still in development,” despite the cancellation of several other projects, including ZeniMax Online’s unannounced MMO, the Perfect Dark reboot, Rare’s Everwild, and Avalanche Studios’ Contraband.

First unveiled during The Game Awards 2023, OD immediately dominated the event’s media coverage, overshadowing nearly every other announcement that year. Since its reveal, however, details have been scarce. Kojima has only spoken about the project in brief, describing it as “risky” and “divisive,” aiming to deliver a gameplay experience unlike anything players have seen before. He has expressed excitement at pushing creative boundaries, even acknowledging that the game will not appeal to everyone.

The project also involves acclaimed filmmaker Jordan Peele, known for horror hits such as Get Out and Us. While Peele’s role remains undisclosed, his collaboration with Kojima has further fueled anticipation for the title.

With Death Stranding 2: On the Beach now launched, fans speculate that Kojima Productions may soon share more concrete information about OD. For now, Xbox players can rest assured that the game is still moving forward, even as Microsoft tightens its portfolio.

Do you think Kojima’s OD will redefine horror gaming, or is it shaping up to be his most polarizing project yet?
